There has been amazing amounts of noise from the climate science community claiming that the extensive snow cover this year is due to a lack of Arctic ice. But as you can see in the graph above, there is no correlation between Arctic ice extent and snow cover. Some years have more snow, some years have less snow. Arctic ice has nothing to do with it.

ICECAP Note: There are correlations between a warm Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (50-70 year cyclical oscillation), low solar and high latitude volcanoes and high latitude blocking (a negative Arctic Oscillation (AO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)) which lead to mid-latitude cold and snow. These factors have been used by industry long range forecasters for years. Climate Modelers who make forecasts 50 to 100 years into the future are just discovering the arctic oscillation and of course alarmists right away blame global warming for the negative AO. If they bothered to check back at the NAO/AO in prior low solar, warm AMO years and high volcanic loading decades like the 1960s they would see this is not unprecedented. You may note that they are comparing this December to years like 1962/63 a year of very strong blocking.
In addition, there are strong correlations between the ocean decadal oscillations and the arctic ice asw NSIDC admitted in 2007 before the scientists were silenced by the grant seekers.
“One prominent researcher, Igor Polyakov at the University of Fairbanks, Alaska, points out that pulses of unusually warm water have been entering the Arctic Ocean from the Atlantic, which several years later are seen in the ocean north of Siberia. These pulses of water are helping to heat the upper Arctic Ocean, contributing to summer ice melt and helping to reduce winter ice growth.
Another scientist, Koji Shimada of the Japan Agency for Marine–Earth Science and Technology, reports evidence of changes in ocean circulation in the Pacific side of the Arctic Ocean. Through a complex interaction with declining sea ice, warm water entering the Arctic Ocean through Bering Strait in summer is being shunted from the Alaskan coast into the Arctic Ocean, where it fosters further ice loss.”
“Many questions still remain to be answered, but these changes in ocean circulation may be important keys for understanding the observed loss of Arctic sea ice.”

This result has been confirmed by Frances et al. (GRL 2007) who showed how the warming in the arctic and the melting was the result of warm water (+3C) in the Barents Sea moving into the Siberian arctic and thinning or melting the ice from beneath.

Climatologist Hubert Lamb, the director of the CRU in 1972
As this interview / wire report with Hubert Lamb, the director of the CRU in 1972 shows, the overall temperature trend they were forecasting then was definitely downwards. Lamb warns that there may be “minor upward fluctuations” but he says we shouldn’t be misled by these into thinking the earth was getting warmer. Hubert Lamb was justifiably considered the father of modern climatology.
The response from Tim Ball
Yes, but that was when Lamb, who founded the CRU was still in charge. I discussed the same thing with him when he was advising me on my doctoral thesis. Our discussion about the cold was triggered by my comment that I had never been so cold as I was standing on the platform at Norwich railway station. This included five years of flying search and rescue throughout the Canadian Arctic.
He anticipated the loss of control of CRU and to who. In his autobiography, “Through all the Changing scenes of Life” he wrote, “The research project which I put forward to the Rockefeller Foundation was awarded a handsome grant, but it came to grief over an understandable difference of scientific judgement between me and the scientist, Dr Tom Wigley, whom we appointed to take charge of the research.” (p.204) Wigley went on to oust Lamb and become Director from which position he linked with the IPCC group in conjunction with his protege Phil Jones who replaced him.
Wigley moved to Colorado to expand the Climategate debacle with US funding. You can watch Wigley at his unctuous best in the 1990 documentary “The Greenhouse Conspiracy” talking about getting funding. A few years after I first met with Lamb I learned from a CRU student that “The Prof,” as he almost derisively called him, was still coming in every day but nobody was paying him any mind. When you read the leaked emails you see that Wigley is the grandfather and eminence gris who they all defer and refer to for his opinion on many issues. I wrote about that here (Icecap Note: a very good read and with interesting photos of the cabal in the early days).
Incidentally, Lamb received money from the US because the UKMO and other British funding sources ignored his goal of building better historic records. He wrote on page 203 that, When the Climatic Research Unit was founded, it was clear that the first and greatest need was to establish the facts of the past record of the natural climate in times before any side effects of human activities could well be important.” This idea evolved from his difficulties with accurate forecasting for bombers flying over Europe in WWII. He determined that better forecasting required understanding past patterns so he spent time in the archives of the Met Office. It was an agenda that did not fit with the political use of climate by Wigley, the UKMO, Schneider and many others. Sadly it is a requirement that still limits understanding today, but made worse by the lack of funding to data reconstruction and the closing of weather stations so that data that was already inadequate has become truncated and discontinuous at best.

What happens if we use the plant stomata-derived CO2 instead of the ice core data?

We find that the ~250-year lag time is consistent. CO2 levels peaked 250 years after the Medieval Warm Period peaked and the Little Ice Age cooling began and CO2 bottomed out 240 years after the trough of the Little Ice Age. In a fashion similar to the glacial/interglacial lags in the ice cores, the plant stomata data indicate that CO2 has lagged behind temperature changes by about 250 years over the last millennium. The rise in CO2 that began in 1860 is most likely the result of warming oceans degassing. “CO2: Ice Cores vs. Plant Stomata”

Global warming, wrongly attributed in an exaggerated manner entirely to man, is, in fact, largely natural. All the hype and projections about it makes most geologists wonder if the climate change has been hijacked from scientists by politicians, and some scientists in the IPCC have been bending backwards to conform to the politicians and gain grants and favours from the UN and various governments.
The earth has witnessed prolonged ice ages with much longer spells of global warming since the first ice age. The only issue to ponder over is if man during last 50 years of fast industrialisation has accelerated the natural process of global warming. The last word on this question as a simplistic cause and effect relation cannot be said with any certainty. The sun-earth system and atmosphere ocean system is too complex to make such generalisations.
Our biosphere may have a huge capacity to absorb the carbon dioxide generated. I was amazed to learn that climate was a political issue in the meeting. It is indeed a pity that in their haste to fleece the poor nations the Al Gores and the Obamas are twisting climate science to suit their political and economic agendas.
Let us restore our balance and sense of proportion in matters of global warming and environmental pollution. Over 1,000 eminent scientists across the world are debating if we are entering a mini-ice age and if global warming is waning. At times one suspects that the huge money involved in all other pollutions of soil, water, air and consequently our food chain makes the powers-that-be and their brokers all around create a hype around global warming and divert attention from real man-made pollution of the environment.
Indeed, we need to promote walking, cycling, better public transport and safety of pedestrians and cyclists. Look around if any of these do-gooders is bothered about it. None at all! They travel in chartered flights to preach car pooling! If there were a Nobel Prize for hypocrisy there would be tough competition for it. If anything, they are all in a mad race to promote the use of more cars, chemical fertilizers, pesticides and GM food, and to discourage organic farming systematically.
We do plant trees but never care to look back at the saplings after the ritual. It is time to call the bluff of the politicians-turned-pseudo-environmentalists and recreate respect for water, soil, air in the spirit of our gurus and Vedas and see the truth of climate change as well as environmental pollution.

Global warming has slowed because of pollution
Global warming has slowed in the last decade, according to the Met Office, as the world pumps out so much pollution it is reflecting the sun’s rays and causing a cooling effect.
When the Earth warms, it is due to burning coal. When the Earth cools it is also due to burning coal. It is warming and cooling at the same time, due to burning coal.

Anyone who opposes ethanol subsidies, as these columns have for decades, comes to appreciate the wisdom of St. Jude. But now that a modern-day patron saint - St. Al of Green - has come out against the fuel made from corn and your tax dollars, maybe this isn’t such a lost cause.
Welcome to the college of converts, Mr. Vice President. “It is not a good policy to have these massive subsidies for first-generation ethanol,” Al Gore told a gathering of clean energy financiers in Greece this week. The benefits of ethanol are “trivial,” he added, but “It’s hard once such a program is put in place to deal with the lobbies that keep it going.”
No kidding, and Mr. Gore said he knows from experience: “One of the reasons I made that mistake is that I paid particular attention to the farmers in my home state of Tennessee, and I had a certain fondness for the farmers in the state of Iowa because I was about to run for President.”
Mr. Gore’s mea culpa underscores the degree to which ethanol has become a purely political machine: It serves no purpose other than re-electing incumbents and transferring wealth to farm states and ethanol producers. Nothing proves this better than the coincident trajectories of ethanol and Mr. Gore’s career.
Ethanol’s claim on the Treasury was first made amid the 1970s energy crisis, with Jimmy Carter and a Democratic Congress subsidizing anything that claimed to be a substitute for foreign oil. Mr. Gore, freshman House class of 1976, was an early proponent of what was then called “gasahol.”
The subsidies continued through the 1990s, with the ethanol lobby finding a sympathetic ear in Clinton EPA chief and Gore protege Carol Browner, who in 1994 banned the gasoline additive MTBE and left ethanol as the only option under clean air laws. When the Senate split 50-50 on repealing this de facto mandate, then Vice President Gore cast the deciding vote for . . . ethanol. That served him well in the 2000 Democratic primaries against ethanol critic Bill Bradley.
During the George W. Bush years, Big Ethanol adapted again, attaching itself to the global warming panic that Mr. Gore did as much as anyone to foment. Republicans in Congress formalized the mandate and increased subsidies in the 2005 and 2007 energy bills.
Meanwhile, the greens have slowly turned against corn ethanol, thanks to the growing scientific evidence that biofuels increase carbon emissions more than fossil fuels do. But the boondoggle lives on in dreams for so-called advanced fuels like cellulosic ethanol. Note Mr. Gore’s objection only to “first generation,” though we’ve been hearing that advanced ethanol is just a year or two away from viability for two decades.
At least on corn subsidies, we now have the makings of a left-right anti-boondoggle coalition. Major corn energy subsidies such as the 54-cent-per-gallon blenders credit expire at the end of the year, and Republican Senators Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn are encouraging the new Congress to prove its fiscal bona fides by letting them die. Chuck Grassley (R., Ethanol) responded this week on Twitter: “WashPost reports 2 of my colleagues want sunset ethanol tax credit R they ready sunset tax subsidies oilANDgas enjoys?”
Messrs. DeMint and Coburn replied, essentially, make our day—and rightly so. Regardless of government intervention, the economy will continue to demand oil and gas, because they are useful. No one could plausibly say the same about ethanol, and maybe now that he’s had his epiphany Mr. Gore will join the fight against the subsidized industry he did so much to promote.

As the FT reports today, the EU is still demanding that it’s not fair that the U.S. not do the same harm to ourselves that they did to themselves, and can’t undo. Only they’ve tweaked their rationale slightly for why we should hobble ourselves and, effectively, commit to buying their stuff to bail out their bubble industries (see those billions in ‘stimulus’ money going to Iberdrola et al.). That whole end is nigh business is just so pre-ClimateGate. Now it is that we will fall behind economically if we don’t.
Because, you see, politicians know much better what’s in businesses’ interests than business. At least, they know what’s in the best interests of the businesses they decided would be their ‘national champion’ industries. And they persist in believing that economic growth and wealth creation come from government and politicians. Recall the Varvel cartoon of Obama knitting a blanket with ‘Jobs’ on it with the yarn unraveling a shirt worn by a workman behind him? That understates things. The yarn actuallly shrinks in the transfer. This is even more true with clean energy jobs’ because they mean higher energy prices.
The ‘green economy’ did not work out well in Europe. Obama no longer points to those faux success stories. This is not because of the recession, and in fact this newfangled central planning killed jobs and contributed mightily to Europe’s debt crisis.
Like Michael Boskin’s anti-stimulus piece in WSJ today, the EU experiment offers a strong argument against the ‘green economy’. ‘Green economy’ is ‘stimulus’ redux, similar in that much of it goes overseas, with a nearly imperceptible near-term boost from temporary, debt-financed jobs in aid-dependent industries created at great per-job cost and killing other jobs.
Other than that, you’re doing a heckuva job, Europe. Thanks for reminding us that when the reason (’excuse’
for doing something is oft-changing, there’s probably not a good reason for doing it.
