17 Sep 10 - “Those who call themselves “Green planet advocates” should be arguing for a CO2- fertilized atmosphere, not a CO2-starved atmosphere,” says Rutan. “Just do a bit of research and you will find that diversity increases when the planet was warm AND had high CO2 atmospheric content.”
“You will also find that we almost had a planet catastrophe when the atmospheric CO2 went down to its low of 180 parts per million. Below 150 ppm, plants die and then we animals die. A more ideal atmosphere for a green planet (4 or 5 times the current CO2) is what we had when the dinosaurs roamed a planet that was nearly all green, pole to pole.”
“Oh, BTW, Al Gore’s personal behavior supports a green planet - his enormous energy use with his 4 homes and his bizjet, does indeed help make the planet greener. Kudos, Al for doing your part to save the planet.....
Lots of data out there and here is a good place to start here.
Thanks to Burt Rutan for this link
Here’s an excerpt from the above link:
“It looks to me like the history and the geology and the biology all pretty much say “Warm is good, cold is bad.” Unfortunately, the patterns of the cycles say “it’s cold now, but the last warm didn’t get very warm, and we’re headed for even colder real soon in geologic time scales. Hundreds of years scale.”
...it was hotter from 7500 BC to 3000 BC than it is today...Just saying…
Who is Burt Rutan?
Burt Rutan was Time magazine’s “100 most influential people in the world, 2004” and Inc. Magazine’s “Entrepreneur of the Year.” Newsweek called him “the man responsible for more innovations in modern aviation than any living engineer.” (After this, Time may call him the greatest persona non grata of the year.) Rutan has received hundreds of awards including: Presidential Citizen’s Medal, Two Collier Trophies, Academy of Achievement Golden Plate and the Charles Lindbergh Award. He has developed 44 new aircraft types since 1972 including; Voyager (1986 RTW-non refueled), SpaceShipOne (2004 Funded by Paul Allen, winner of X-prize) and the first commercial spaceship - SpaceShipTwo (2009 Funded by Sir Richard Branson).

Two years ago, William Livingston and Matthew Penn of the National Solar Observatory in Tucson, in a controversial paper that contradicted conventional wisdom and upset global warming theorists, predicted that sunspots could more or less disappear after 2015, possibly indicating the onset of another Little Ice Age.
As they stated then, “the occurrence of prolonged periods with no sunspots is important to climate studies, since the Maunder Minimum was shown to correspond with the reduced average global temperatures on the Earth.” The Maunder Minimum lasted for approximately 70 years, from about 1645 to 1715, and was marked by bitter cold, widespread crop failures, and severe human privation. They concluded their 2008 paper by noting, “Finally, observations of this type during the onset of the next sunspot cycle will be critical in determining if the observed trends continue.”
We are now in the onset of that next sunspot cycle, called Cycle 24 - these cycles typically last 11 years - and Livingston and Penn have this month published new, potentially ominous findings in a paper entitled Long-term Evolution of Sunspot Magnetic Fields: “we are now seeing far fewer sunspots than we saw in the preceding cycle; solar Cycle 24 is producing an anomalously low number of dark spots and pores,” they report.
Their conclusions have potential “dramatic implications.” Cycle 24 could have just half the number of sunspots as the recently completed Cycle 23, and there could be “virtually no sunspots in Cycle 25.” The implications of their research points to decades of spotlessness.
The authors base their conclusions on the assumption that recent trends will continue, an assumption that, they note, may well be proven in time to be false. At the same time, given that their findings are consistent with those of other solar scientists, and given the stark implications of another little ice age for society at large, they felt compelled to publish a warning.
“It is important to note that it is always risky to extrapolate linear trends; but the importance of the implications from making such an assumption justify its mention,” they state.
The upshot for scientists and world leaders should be clear, particularly since other scientists in recent years have published analyses that also indicate that global cooling could be on its way. Climate can and does change toward colder periods as well as warmer ones. Over the last 20 years, some $80-billion has been spent on research dominated by the assumption that global temperatures will rise. Virtually no research has investigated the consequences of the very live possibility that temperatures will plummet. Research into global cooling and its implications for the globe is long overdue. I got the invitation today and after 20 years of paying my dues to AAAS it was finally too much - I requested an immediate cancellation of my membership.
“Today I received my invitation to the first Webinar of your new website Member Central. This is titled Climate Change and the Public: Overcoming Skepticism After ClimateGate. I and I believe many other AAAS members am personally affronted by your choosing to present this panel, containing only apologists for the “onsensus"view on climate change. The revelations of Climategate are a stain on science, and your attempt to treat it by an intensified PR campaign is distasteful and self-defeating. How much better it would have been had you chosen to present a proper debate, with AAAS scientists (e.g., Lindzen of MIT or Freeman Dyson) on both sides of the issue.
For the first time, I am ashamed of my membership in AAAS and request that you terminate my membership immediately. “

World Climate Report
Global warming causes coral bleaching - and there is absolutely no doubt about it, right? Tens of thousands of websites found searching for “Global warming and coral bleaching” seem to agree that when the ocean warms, the oxygen content reduces, and the corals become “bleached.” The heat affects the tiny algae which live symbiotically inside the corals and supply them with food. The heat stress damages the algae and in consequence leads to coral death. The argument for the global warming/coral bleaching connection is bolstered by the massive El Nino event in 1997 and 1998 that led to unusually warm tropical waters throughout the world’s lower latitudes and coral bleaching in many locations. But, as with so many other topics covered in World Climate Report, the idea that corals are in peril because of global warming turns out to be considerably more complicated than is commonly presented to the public at large.
Three recent articles give us reason to question the alarmists’ claims that coral reefs are in deep trouble due to the buildup of greenhouse gases.
The first piece was published in Marine Environmental Research by M.J.C. Crabbe of the United Kingdom’s University of Bedfordshire (we cannot make this up - this marine scientist has the last name of Crabbe). Crabbe notes “Coral reefs throughout the world are under severe challenge from a variety of environmental factors including overfishing, destructive fishing practices, coral bleaching, ocean acidification, sea-level rise, algal blooms, agricultural run-off, coastal and resort development, marine pollution, increasing coral diseases, invasive species, and hurricane/cyclone damage.” We agree - coral reefs are facing no end of challenges in our modern world!
Crabbe studied reefs in Jamaica, and he notes that “The Jamaican reefs are subject to a number of both acute and chronic stressors, the last including overfishing and continuing coastal development, including the much-publicised development on land adjacent to Pear Tree Bottom reef and the resurfacing of the North Jamaican coastal highway.” Again, there is a lot more to the story of reefs than just global warming.
He studied various reefs from 2000 to 2008, and this period included a mass bleaching event in 2005. Crabbe concluded “Despite the multiple influences on the reef sites over the study period, the size classes of the corals studied showed resilience to change.” We suspected this all along - the coral reefs have been around for 100’ of millions of years! He states “What is apparent from this study is that despite the chronic and acute disturbances between 2002 and 2008, demographic studies indicate good levels of coral resilience on the fringing reefs around Discovery Bay in Jamaica.” Crabbe warns that “Unfortunately, previously successful efforts to engage the local fisherman in controlling catches around Discovery Bay have not been maintained, and it may be that the development of a Discovery Bay Marine Park is the only solution.” We get the message - don’t blame global warming, blame the local fishermen!
Next up comes from two scientists from the University of Exeter’s Marine Spatial Ecology Lab who focused on coral in other Caribbean reefs; Mumby and Harborne noted that “Because the Bahamas was severely disturbed by the 1998 coral bleaching event, and later by hurricane Frances in the summer of 2004, coral cover was low at the beginning of the study, averaging only 7% at reserve and non-reserve sites.” Corals have been around for eons, they have survived periods much hotter than anything experienced today, they have survived massive El Nino events, and as seen in their study area, the corals can be severely damaged by hurricanes. Delicate corals would have never made it - robust corals would win in the world of natural selection.
In the Caribbean, macroalgae compete vigorously with coral, and macroalgae are controlled to a large extent by herbivorous parrotfishes living within the reef. The parrotfish are more common in reserves than in non-protected areas, and sure enough “The proportional increase in coral cover after 2.5 years was fairly high at reserve sites (mean of 19% per site) and significantly greater than that in non-reserve sites which, on average, exhibited no net recovery.” They conclude “Reducing herbivore exploitation as part of an ecosystem-based management strategy for coral reefs appears to be justified.” An important implication of the research is that the long-term impact of and recovery from coral bleaching events may be largely controlled by herbivore fish – rather than just global warming.
Finally, we looked at a recent article from the scientific journal entitled Coral Reefs written by ten scientists from French Polynesia, France, Florida, and California. Apparently, doing work on the reefs of Moorea (an island in French Polynesia) attracts a crowd? Adjeroud et al. studied the Tiahura Outer Reef Sector (TORS) in Moorea from 1991-2006 (sign us up for this duty) and they noted that “Coral assemblages in Moorea, French Polynesia, have been impacted by multiple disturbances (one cyclone and four bleaching events between 1991 and 2006).” Their conclusions include the statement “In addition, our results reveal that corals can recover rapidly following a dramatic decline. Such decadal-scale recovery of coral cover has been documented at some locations, but our results are novel in demonstrating rapid recovery against a backdrop of ongoing, high frequency, and large-scale disturbances.”
Enough said! See post.

Reality denier: After Arctic sea ice extent grows by over 7,000 Manhattans in three years, alarmist Mark Serreze claims “It’s continuing down in a death spiral”
Another big-ice Arctic thaw, say experts
“There are claims coming from some communities that the Arctic sea ice is recovering, is getting thicker again,” Mark Serreze, director of the Colorado-based centre, told Postmedia News on Wednesday. “That’s simply not the case. It’s continuing down in a death spiral.” ...Serreze said the overall pattern is unmistakable: “The decline in the extent of ice - the square kilometres - is being attended by a decrease in the volume of ice.” [Sept 7, 2010]: Arctic Sea Ice News & Analysis
Average ice extent for August was 5.98 million square kilometers (2.31 million square miles), 1.69 million square kilometers (653,000 square miles) below the 1979 to 2000 average, but 620,000 square kilometers (240,000 square miles) above the average for August 2007...

Author added a nice quote from an RC commenter,
“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told by AGW voices that there are NO qualified skeptics or peer reviewed/published work by them. Including right here by RC regulars. In truth there is serious work and questions raised by significant work by very qualified skeptics which has been peer reviewed and published. It should be at least a bit disturbing for this type of denial to have been perpetrated with such a chorus. It’s one thing to engage and refute. But it’s not right to misrepresent as not even existing the counter viewpoints. I fully recognize the adversarial environment between the two opposing camps which RC and CA/WUWT represent, but the the perpetual declaration that there is no legitimate rejection of AGW is out of line.” - John H., comment at RealClimate.org
Minor Victory - on a side note with the help of Bill Hughes the publisher of the journal Energy & Environment, we successfully got Scopus to remove the trade journal listing and properly list E&E as a peer-reviewed journal. That now gives two credible sources indexing E&E as peer-reviewed - EBSCO and Scopus. This helps tremendously, especially when referencing MM’s papers in E&E and all the rest (roughly 15% of the list).

CFACT
CFACT is pleased to release the second group of videos in which Lord Christopher Monckton refutes Prof. John Abraham’s attacks. In case you missed it, CFACT recently sent out an alert titled “Target: Monckton” regarding the heavy fire Lord Christopher Monckton has taken for daring to challenge the prevailing orthodoxy on global warming.
Last year Lord Monckton gave a presentation on global warming in St. Paul Minnesota that became a sensation on YouTube. This inspired Prof. John Abraham of the University of St. Thomas to attack his presentation in a lengthy video.
Lord Monckton has responded with a video series of his own. Although the global warming crowd has done all they can to avoid open, honest discussion and debate, opinion polls clearly show that the majority of the public no longer buys the warming hype. Climategate and the host of scandals and revelations that followed have forced them to change their tactics.
CFACT and Lord Monckton welcome the chance to debate. We invite you to view Lord Monckton’s latest videos, or if you haven’t seen the previous ones, start with the introduction here. We firmly believe that if both sides are finally given a chance to speak, common sense will win through. Sunlight is a good disinfectant.

Hamilton rages on, Monckton replies
By Joanne Nova
Christopher Monckton writes:
Clive Hamilton in the Weekend Australian (28 August) seeks to justify his apocalyptic vision of manmade climate catastrophe by a malevolent personal attack on me. The science behind his “facts” is incorrect.
He foresees “a sea-level rise of nearly 1 m”: yet the IPCC, which had previously taken 1 m as its high-end estimate of sea-level rise by 2100, has cut it to 59 cm (central estimate just 43 cm). Sea level is rising at only 20-30 cm/century. There has been no appreciable acceleration in 150 years.
He talks of Australia’s forest fires and “dwindling water supplies”, but avoids mentioning the recent heavy rains or Australia’s desert climate. A former governor-general whom I met in Canberra has one solution to that: reverse the 50,000 years of deforestation in Australia, moistening the climate.
Mr. Hamilton says that in 20 years the world will be “dominated by the appalling consequences of ‘global warming’”. James Hansen told the US Congress just that 20 years ago, but his lurid forecast of extreme warming did not prove accurate. There has been little “global warming” this millennium.
Last week, at the World Federation of Scientists’ annual seminar on planetary emergencies in Sicily, I heard presentations from several researchers - each using different methods - showing that the warming from doubling atmospheric CO2 concentration will be just 1 C, not the 3.3 C the IPCC imagines.
Professor Richard Lindzen of MIT, who knows more about the atmosphere than anyone, showed that the IPCC’s computer models incorrectly predict 1-3% more evaporation in response to 1 C warming. Measured increase in evaporation is 5.7%. The IPCC has thus tripled true “climate sensitivity” - the warming to be expected from any radiative forcing, such as more CO2.
Dr. Nir Shaviv studied the extensive scientific literature indicating that fluctuations in the radiation from the Sun are 5-6 times more influential than the IPCC had thought. He, too, concluded that a CO2 doubling would cause a harmless 1 C of warming.
I reported that the IPCC’s methods “predicted” that measured radiative forcings from all major greenhouse gases should have caused 1.5 C warming from 1950-2005. Only 0.6 C happened. Whichever way you look at it, the IPCC has greatly over-egged the pudding. Without the exaggeration, there is no problem.
Finally, no true scientist would attack the man rather than his argument. Mr. Hamilton says the only political leader who will meet me is Tony Abbott. Last week I met the Italian Defence Minister, who received a standing ovation from the world’s scientists in Sicily after a fine speech advocating a return to scientific rigour. He said spending on “global warming” was pointless.
Vaclav Klaus, president of the Czech Republic, regularly quotes my climate research with approval. Margaret Thatcher, whom I had originally advised that
“global warming” needed to be watched, has changed her mind, as have I.
Mr. Hamilton accuses me of “a conspiracy theory about the imminent imposition of a communist world government”. Yet the (fortunately-defeated) September 15 2009 draft of what was to have been the Treaty of Copenhagen proposed an unelected world “government”, with sweeping powers to end the free market and to impose worldwide taxation without representation as well as centralized environmental and economic controls. See Annex 1, paras. 36-38, at www.scienceandpublicpolicy.org.
Mr. Hamilton adds that, in saying I have invented a potential broad-spectrum cure for infectious diseases, I am a “fantasist”. It is a pity that he devoted no more care to checking his facts about me than about climate. Search for “Monckton” at the UK Patent Office, www.ukipo.gov.uk. Patents have indeed been lodged. Our researches continue. It is not I but Mr. Hamilton who is a fantasist. “Global warming” is a non-problem, and the correct solution to a non-problem is to have the courage to do nothing, and address the real environmental problems of the world instead.
The Viscount Monckton of Brenchley

750 Peer-Reviewed Papers Supporting Skepticism of “Man-Made” Global Warming Alarm
“The following papers support skepticism of “man-made” global warming or the environmental or economic effects of. Addendums, comments, corrections, erratum, replies, responses and submitted papers are not included in the peer-reviewed paper count. These are included as references in defense of various papers. There are many more listings than just the 750 papers. Ordering of the papers is alphabetical by title except for the Hockey Stick, Cosmic Rays and Solar sections which are chronological. This list will be updated and corrected as necessary.”

It is well known that carbon dioxide cannot directly account for the observed increase in global temperature over the past century. This has led climate scientists to theorize that many feedback relationships exists within the climate system, serving to amplify the impact of rising CO2 levels. One of these is the impact of rising temperature on the ability of the ecosystem to absorb CO2. The temperature sensitivity of ecosystem respiratory processes (referred to as Q10) is a key determinant of the interaction between climate and the carbon cycle. New research, recently published in the journal Science, shows that the Q10 of ecosystem respiration is invariant with respect to mean annual temperature, and independent of the analyzed ecosystem type.
This newly discovered temperature insensitivity suggests that climate sensitivity to CO2 is much smaller than assumed by climate models. Read full analysis here.

By Tim Daniel
"Avatar” is returning to theaters - this time in an even lengthier form - but the movie’s creator seems intent on once again mocking the very people that have made his success possible.
“Titanic” film director James Cameron quickly went for the oft-traversed intellectual low road of ad hominem attacks, recently attacking skeptics of global warming as those of piggish DNA.
“I think they’re swine,” said Cameron to the American Renewable Energy Day Summit in Aspen Sunday night. Laughingly, Cameron piggishly proclaimed “swine” just moments after receiving eco-ovations from the environmental Aspen crowd.
Why? He had praised a documentary that extolled the evils of a proposed hydropower project in Brazil that would ostensibly “displace a large tribal community,” therefore violating even more sacred limousine liberal codes: group identity and the hatred of capitalism.
Hydropower is “clean” by most mainstream standards, so go figure.
Hypocrisy is not the only feature of the global warming alarmist agenda. James Cameron should have read my previous Daily Caller column to avoid a trap so simple that even a Na’vi wouldn’t take the bait. Think of it this way: sticks and stones may break my bones but the global warming alarmist “Pure Anger” approach will never hurt me:
“Pure Anger” Approach” - This occurrence is an emotional, visceral display that shows skeptics are winning the day. It’s a common feature of debate - a citizen dares to question the validity of the global warming religiosity and is called a “flat-earther” or some other pejorative name. Dr. Cohen’s advice for the Pure Anger approach is to simply ignore it and revel in the fact that it is the surest sign that global warming advocates are losing the debate.
It’s not the first time that Cameron has taken the anger approach on the topic of AGP. Last March, Mr. Cameron extended the environmentalist “Appeal to Authority” by claiming that he wanted to “call those deniers out into the street at high noon and shoot it out with those boneheads.” Per Daily Caller, the “Appeal to Authority” is:
“Appeal to Authority” - This seems to be the first line of defense for global warming advocates. They often appeal to their authority by citing ‘irrefutable evidence,’ ‘consensus’ and such to assert authority and stifle debate. Recently, 31,000 climate scientists have signed the Petition Project. Also, top international climate scientists recently sent the United Nations a petition that challenges the UN’s global warming agenda. Settled science? Hardly.
Director Cameron put the offer of a high-noon street debate on the table and an exchange of sorts was in the works for months. Proponents and skeptics were scheduled to duke it out in the realm of ideas and science. The “bonehead high-noon shootout at the Global Warming corral” (as Daily Caller’s Jim Treacher alludes to as well) was to be a ringing success.
But alas, and all too predictably, James Cameron scheduled, re-scheduled, obfuscated and eventually cancelled the “shootout.”
What a shame as a Western-themed discussion would have made for a much better movie than a stereotypical three-hour leftist treatise presentation on azure-pigmented, capitalism-loathing, earth-worshiping, technology-disparaging aliens from a distant planet.
Tim Daniel is a small business owner and entrepreneur who currently lives in San Diego, California with his wife and lovely cat. He is editor in chief of the southern California-based Left Coast Rebel blog.
Read more here. See how Cameron tried to stop the building of a clean hydroelectric power plant in the Amazon here. See Noel Sheppard’s story with emails that belie Cameron’s story about why the debate was cancelled here.
Cameron’s call Pure Anger was met with the death of an environmental militant at the Discovery Channel this week. Cameron is partly to blame. Left leaning Hollywood has long bought into mad-made global warming and the environmental agenda requiring great sacrifice for all of us, even as they continue to enjoy their lavish lifestyles. Leonardo DiCaprio, who we all enjoyed in Titanic even went as far as to produce a movie “The 11th Hour” to push the idea we were destroying the planet by breathing and driving and heating and cooling our homes.
Above we see him in a recent press photo. Suggestions about what he was demonstrating with his hand included the amount of real science in his movie, the number of people who paid to see it, the size of one of his body parts.
