They Said It

We are walking greenhouse gas factories - will they come after us next?

By Joseph D’Aleo, CCM

In recent testimony in congress the EPA administrator Lisa Jackson and friends depicted carbon dioxide as a health danger that needed regulation. They and the dims on the committee referred to carbon dioxide at times in shorthand as carbon.

Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) pointed out to Lisa Jackson, who with a background in Chemistry should know better, that she should refer to carbon dioxide not conflate it with carbon since carbon is so pervasive and critical to carbon based life forms like ours. It is also a component of most everything we eat or manufacture and value.  “This table is made of carbon,” Barton said “If you were wearing a diamond ring, Administrator Jackson, it would be made of carbon.”

In actual fact the human body is 18% carbon. We breathe out carbon dioxide at 40,000 ppm over 100 times the ambient atmospheric levels. The human body is also 65% water by mass. We breathe out and evaporate from our pores water - more when the body is under heat stress as evaporation is a cooling process that all life forms use - one common example is a panting dog.

Water vapor and carbon dioxde are primary greenhouse gases. Some, of us release methane in our flatulence (apprently not all - it is genetic believe it or not). Livestock do emit methane.

Watch out the EPA and the enviro groups might start focusing on us after they drive our power plants and factories out of business and ban meat.

ATI Says ‘Stop Calling It Carbon’

Paul Chesser, paul.chesser@atinstitute.org

After an editorial in the Wall Street Journal titled “Carbon and Democracy” that confuses casual observers about exactly what is alleged greenhouse gas pollution and what isn’t, American Tradition Institute executive director Paul Chesser today is calling attention to misleading terms in the global warming debate.

“It’s carbon dioxide, not carbon, and there’s a big difference,” Chesser said. “Humans and animals exhale the former, and plants love it, but environmental extremists demonize it. They love to confuse the issue by calling it carbon to create an image of black particulates emitting from smokestacks, when in fact the alleged global warming ‘pollutant’ we talk about is a colorless, odorless and harmless gas.”

Unfortunately even the conservative, free-market media (like the Journal, despite their sound positions on energy and climate issues) has fallen into this trap. This confusion was driven home in testimony by EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson last week before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Asked how she would describe carbon, Ms. Jackson replied, “As black carbon soot.” Fortunately Rep. Joe Barton corrected her, saying, “That table in front of you is carbon. Carbon itself is not a pollutant.”

The use of “carbon” rather than “carbon dioxide” by environmentalists is meant to deceive, and its use by climate realists only neuters their argument. As columnist Terry McCrann of The Herald Sun in Melbourne, Australia recently wrote here.

There is neither the need to abbreviate carbon dioxide to carbon; and the exercise of abbreviation renders it inaccurate. A bald-faced, quite deliberate lie.

For if carbon dioxide can be called ‘carbon pollution,’ in this or any other universe, in this or any other reality, well then rain has to be called “hydrogen pollution.”

The reason the term is used by (Australian Prime Minister Julia) Gillard is an exercise of quite deliberate despicable dishonesty. It is the modern political form of those subliminal advertisements that are banned. To suggest that it is about stopping dirty bits of grit—the very real carbon pollution of yesterday’s coal-burning home fires which gave London its sooty smog and killed thousands every year.

“The real carbon pollution which no longer exists in modern developed economies, mostly precisely because of clean coal-fired power stations. And which does exist—and kills—in developing and third-world countries, denied centralised power generation.”

Whether it’s in polls or in the news media, identifying “carbon” as a contributor to global warming simply because it conjures a polluting image is deceptive and wrong.

“I call upon everyone in the media—including my friends in the conservative/libertarian movement—to get your terms straight,” said Chesser, who admits he has been guilty of the same transgression in the past. “The government wants limits on carbon dioxide, which they want you to believe causes global warming. So tell the story right and leave the imagery of ‘black carbon soot’ out of it.”

Icecap Note: We agree Paul. Soot is a health issue and should be controlled. Carbon dioide is a benefactor, a plant fertilizer, it should be encouraged not regulated and taxed/

Michael Mann claims he was defamed. He and Andrew Weaver gang up on Dr. Tim Ball

By Darryl Greer

Prof Claims Climate-Denier Defamed Him

VANCOUVER, B.C. (CN) - A Pennsylvania State University professor claims climate-change denier Timothy Ball defamed him in an interview published by the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, a Winnipeg-based think tank. Michael Mann, a professor in Penn State’s meteorology department and director of the university’s Earth Systems Science Center, claims that Ball defamed him when he said that Mann “should be in the State Pen, not Penn State,” for his alleged role in the so-called climate gate email tussle.

Mann says that Ball and the Centre refused to issue an apology and published the words with the “purpose of harming the plaintiff and exposing him to hatred, ridicule and contempt, lowering the plaintiff in the estimation of others, and causing him to be shunned and avoided.”

It’s not the first time Ball’s been sued by a climate scientist for defamation. In February, Andrew Weaver of the University of Victoria sued Ball over an article published by the Canada Free Press, in which Ball allegedly accused Weaver of cherry-picking scientific data in his work with the UN’s intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.Mann seeks punitive damages and wants the article removed from its electronic database. He is represented in B.C. Supreme Court by Roger McConchie.

97 Ships Stuck in Ice Near St. Petersburg
Dmitry Lovetsky / AP, Moscow Times

The icebreaker Mudyug leading the bulk carrier Federal Danube as men fish in the Gulf of Finland on Tuesday.

ST. PETERSBURG - Icebreakers have been called in to free dozens of ships that became trapped in ice in the Gulf of Finland near St. Petersburg last week.

The administration of St. Petersburg’s port said at least 97 ships were still waiting for help on Tuesday, down from 160 ships two days ago. The eastern Gulf of Finland has not seen such thick ice since 1992, according to the Federal of Sea and River Transportation Agency. In some places the ice is more than a meter thick.

Most of the trapped ships are cargo vessels, but some are passenger ferries. Many have been trapped for at least several days. Among the ships freed over the weekend was a ferry that had been stuck for six days with 12 people on board, including a pregnant woman. The ferry runs between a port near St. Petersburg and the Kaliningrad region. The Princess Maria ferry running between St. Petersburg and the Finnish capital, Helsinki, has been suspended since March 9, but was due to resume its operation on Wednesday, ferry operator St. Peter Line said.

The federal agency said 10 icebreakers, including the nuclear-powered Vaigach based in Murmansk, were leading the ships to open water in caravans.

Japan’s Nuclear Crisis May Doom Global Warming Activists’ Dreams

The PJ Tatler

Anti-nuclear critics may be celebrating the possible death of commercial nuclear power.  But as U.K. energy expert Benny Peiser notes this morning, less nuclear power will mean most industrialized countries will increase their dependency on fossil fuels for electricity, not reduce them. This means global warming activists’ goal may be dying a quick death.

Japan’s rebuilding alone will require a new surge in electricity - not less - as it will need high energy aluminum, steel and concrete for reconstruction.  The country will probably turn to old coal and oil plants, to liquefied natural gas and to natural gas to power their high tech economic base and to aid reconstruction.

The turn away from nuclear will be felt throughout Europe. Germany itself will see a 4% increase in carbon emissions alone as a result of its new imposition of a nuclear moratorium for their seven plants, which emit zero carbon emissions. The European Union is set to call for a continent-wide moratorium to test all atomic plants for earthquake protection.  Some older plants will not return on line out of fear. Even in Washington, Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) has called for closure of older nukes.

The loss of relatively cheap nuclear energy will put new pressure on governments to turn to the only ready-made energy answer, fossil fuels.  It will mean public pressure to drill for more oil, extract more coal and explore shale gas reserves. And as gas prices spike worldwide, pressure will increase for renewed domestic oil drilling, especially in the Gulf of Mexico.

While the environmental community might be gleeful in saying “Hail, Hail Nuclear is Dead!,” what really may have died this week is the environmentalists’ dream of the imposition by fiat of a worldwide climate change pact.

“An earthquake with an 8.9 magnitude struck Japan. And some say climate change isn’t real?!”

By Amanda Carey, Daily Caller

Hours after a massive earthquake rattled Japan, environmental advocates connected the natural disaster to global warming. The president of the European Economic and Social Committee, Staffan Nilsson, issued a statement calling for solidarity in tackling the global warming problem.

“Some islands affected by climate change have been hit,” said Nilsson. “Has not the time come to demonstrate on solidarity - not least solidarity in combating and adapting to climate change and global warming?” “Mother Nature has again given us a sign that that is what we need to do,” he added.

Global warming enthusiasts have also taken to Twitter to raise awareness of the need to respond to the earthquake by finally acting on climate change. And the Competitive Enterprise Institute’s Lee Doren compiled some of the best ones.

Some examples:

AliceTMBFan said “2 hours of geography earlier talking about Japan has left me thinking...maybe global warming is way more serious then we thought...”

Arbiterofwords tweeted “I’m worried that Japan earthquake, on top of other recent natural ‘disasters’, is a sign we’ve passed point of no return for climate change.”

MrVikas said “Events like the Japan earthquake and tsunami MUST keep climate change at forefront of policy thought. Tayyclayy noted her frustration by tweeting “An earthquake with an 8.9 magnitude struck Japan. And some say climate change isn’t real?!”

DanFranklin postulated “Never really believed all this global warming talk, but after the earthquake in NZ and today in Japan. Maybe we’ve ruined the world.”

And TeamIanHarding tweeted “While Japan witnessed an earthquake we were talking about the problems that global warming leads to in school. Think. Pray. And change.”

Do they have a point?

“Global warming alarmists will exploit any natural disaster to promote their anti-fossil fuel agenda,” Tom Borelli of the Free Enterprise Project told The Daily Caller, adding that the climate change reaction is a result of the “global warming spin machine.”

“First it’s global warming, then it’s climate change, now it’s probably tectonic instability “no doubt all caused by man,” he said.

When contacted by The DC, Dan Weiss, Director of Climate Strategy at the Center for American Progress, also expressed skepticism at the link between global warming and the earthquake in Japan. “I am not a scientist,” said Weiss, “but I have never heard of a link between global warming and earthquakes.” Icecap Note: Good for you Dan, one of first things you said we can all agree on.

Is The NSF Funding Untestable Climate Predictions? Roger Pielke Comments

By Roger Pielke Sr.

This new Center appears to fit into the conclusion that the National Science Foundation is failing in its support of research questions based on sound scientific practices, as I outlined in my posts

The Difference Between Prediction and Predictability - Recommendations For Research Funding Related to These Distinctly Different Concepts

Diminishing Returns From Multi-Decadal Global Climate Model Simulations

The National Science Foundation Funds Multi-Decadal Climate Predictions Without An Ability To Verify Their Skill

In the third post above, I wrote (slightly edited)

“Funding of multi-decadal regional climate predictions by the National Science Foundation which cannot be verified in terms of accuracy is not only a poor use of tax payer funds, but is misleading policymakers and others on the actual skill that exists in predicting changes [in the climate] in the future.”

The University of Chicago Center, as presented in the news release and on the CIM-EARTH website, appear to be perpetuating the scientifically flawed approach of using untestable climate model predictions to communicate economic and other human impacts decades from now to policymakers as robust science. The National Science Foundation needs to be challenged on their funding of studies which are based on untestable multi-decadal global climate model predictions.

A catalog of the collected papers from SPPI has just been updated through February 2011 and posted on our website. Papers cover many aspects of the energy/environment and science/policy arena. Click on the PDF file to open the catalog, and then click on the link to any particular paper to open its PDF for reading or printing. Many of the papers have a Summary for Policy Makers, convenient for highly busy readers.

The sets of papers once called “BlogWatch” , “ScareWatch” and “Commentary and Essays” have been replaced with postings at the SPPI Blog. The SPPI Blog has a pretty good search engines for key words.

From Jack Black’s Climate Change Dictionary

PEER REVIEW: The act of banding together a group of like-minded academics with a funding conflict of interest, for the purpose of squeezing out any research voices that threaten the multi-million dollar government grant gravy train.

SETTLED SCIENCE: Betrayal of the scientific method for politics or money or both.

DENIER: Anyone who suspects the truth.

CLIMATE CHANGE: What has been happening for billions of years, but should now be flogged to produce ‘panic for profit.’

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE: Leftist Nutcase Prize, unrelated to “Peace” in any meaningful way.

DATA, EVIDENCE: Unnecessary details. If anyone asks for this, see “DENIER,” above.

CLIMATE SCIENTIST: A person skilled in spouting obscure, scientific-sounding jargon that has the effect of deflecting requests for “DATA” by “DENIERS.’ Also skilled at affecting an aura of “Smartest Person in the Room” to buffalo gullible legislators and journalists.

JUNK SCIENCE: The use of invalid scientific evidence resulting in findings of causation which simply cannot be justified or understood from the standpoint of the current state of credible scientific or medical knowledge

Unscientific hype about the flooding risks from climate change will cost us all dearly

By Christopher Booker

ICECAP NOTE: Nature magazine has long since lost objectivity on the global warming issue. This story on a recent paper by two key IPCC scientists and two insurance risk management propagandists is based on models combined with and compared to other models. It is simulated results in a virtual world yet few in the media dared to look beyond the paper mache facade. Thankfully Christopher Booker and Willis Eschenbach did. Nature editors should be embarrassed what they found.

--------------

As the great global warming scare continues to crumble, attention focuses on all those groups that have a huge interest in keeping it alive. Governments look on it as an excuse to raise billions of pounds in taxes. Wind farm developers make fortunes from the hidden subsidies we pay through our electricity bills. A vast academic industry receives more billions for concocting the bogus science that underpins the scare. Carbon traders hope to make billions from corrupt schemes based on buying and selling the right to emit CO2. But no financial interest stands to make more from exaggerating the risks of climate change than the re-insurance industry, which charges retail insurers for “catastrophe cover”, paid for by all of us through our premiums.

An insight into this was given by a paper published by Nature on February 17, which claimed to show for the first time how man-made climate change greatly increases the risk of flood damage. Among the eight authors of the paper are two of the most influential scientists at the heart of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Prof Peter Stott of the UK Met Office’s Hadley Centre and Dr Myles Allen, head of Oxford’s Climate Dynamics Group. Two of their co-authors are from Risk Management Solutions (RMS), a California-based firm which is the world leader in advising the insurance industry on climate change.

The study, based entirely on computer models, focused on the exceptional flooding that took place in England and Wales in the autumn of 2000. Its conclusion - that climate change could increase the chance of flooding by up to 90 per cent - was widely publicised, without questioning, by all the usual media cheerleaders for global warming, led by the BBC’s Richard Black ("Climate change increases flood risk, researchers say").

When less partisan observers examined the paper, however, they were astonished. Although Nature has long been a leading propagandist for man-made climate change, this example seemed truly bizarre. Why had this strangely opaque study been based solely on the results of a series of computer models - mainly provided by the Hadley Centre and RMS - and not on any historical data about rainfall and river flows? Read much more from Christopher on this at the Telegraph.

Willis Eschenbach continues to amaze us all with the breadth of his knowledge about many aspects of this and other issues. He has a post Christopher refers to on WUWT.

After detailed analysis of the study’s multiple flaws, he sums up by accusing Nature of “trying to pass off the end-result of a long daisy-chain of specifically selected, untested, unverified, un-investigated computer models as valid, falsifiable, peer-reviewed science”.

His conclusion is worth quoting at some length: “When your results represent the output of four computer models, fed into a fifth computer model, whose output goes to a sixth computer model, which is calibrated against a seventh computer model, and then your results are compared to a series of different results from the fifth computer model, but run with different parameters, in order to show that flood risks have increased from greenhouse gases...” you cannot pretend that this is “a valid representation of reality”, let alone “a sufficiently accurate representation of reality to guide our future actions”.
