Release from Sierra Club: Washington, D.C. - October 22, 2009, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced a proposal to designate more than 128 million acres of Alaskan coastline and waters as critical habitat for the polar bear. In May 2008 the Department of the Interior listed the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Today’s proposal, required by the Endangered Species Act, follows on a decision earlier this week by the Minerals Management Service to approve offshore oil drilling in key polar bear habitat in Alaska’s Beaufort Sea. The agency is also considering drilling plans for polar bear habitat in the Chukchi Sea.
By Alan Caruba
I received an email from the Sierra Club urging me to sign a petition to declare the polar bear an endangered species.
The Department of the Interior is considering this and it would cover much of the Arctic, including the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean. The Sierra Club is worried because Shell Oil wants to drill for oil in the Beaufort Sea, a part of the “critical habitat for the bear.” So, for anyone who doesn’t think that thwarting all attempts to drill for oil in the Arctic isn’t the real reason to “save” the thriving polar bear population, the answer is that it has nothing to do with polar bears and everything to do with the primary goal of all environmental organization, denying energy sources to Americans and everyone else.
Indeed, the Sierra Club said declaring the polar bear endangered was “necessary to stop harmful activities such as oil drilling.” So I guess it doesn’t get any more plain than that.
The Sierra Club went on to blatantly lie about the status of polar bears, claiming that “survival rates for polar bear cubs are plunging.” It is common knowledge that male polar bears are known to kill cubs, but the survival rates have much more to do with the mother bear’s ability to catch ringed seals.
Ironically, polar bears’ favorite delicacy is the pups of ringed seals. Mother Nature doesn’t much care who wins the survival marathon and the Sierra Club is not calling for an endangered species declaration for ringed seals.
The Sierra Club is lying. The Natural Resources Defense Council is lying. The World Wildlife Fund is lying. They could not care less about polar bears. Their objective is shutting off access to anywhere that has oil or natural gas reserves. In a July 2006 a report, “Polar Bear Politics: Underestimating the survival capacity of one popular bear” by Jennifer Marohasy, the Director of the Food and Environmental Unit at the Australian based Institute of Public Affairs was published. The estimate of the population is “about 25,000 polar bears existing in 19 relatively discrete populations across Norway, Denmark, Russia, Alaska, Greenland, and Canada.”
“Forty years ago, there were only about 5,000 bears, the worldwide population depressed by hunting.” In the 1970s, nations agreed to restrict hunting, resulting in the growth of the population. The BIG LIE is that the Arctic is melting because of “global warming.” The Arctic has, in fact, “warmed” over the past two decades and there has been a reduction in sea ice, but there has been no “global warming”, only a natural cycle of warming that followed a Little Ice Age that ended around 1850 after three hundred years.
In fact, in October 2007, NASA announced the results of an in-depth study of Arctic sea ice and concluded what melting had occurred was due “a change in wind patterns” that had “compressed the sea ice, loaded it into the Transpolar Drift Stream, and then sped its flow out of the Arctic.” Wind patterns, not “global warming.”
The Earth is now into a new cooling cycle that began in 1998 and which meteorologists predict will last for several decades. What they won’t tell you is that they have their fingers crossed that it does not, in fact, signal a new Ice Age. The period between ice ages is about 11,500 years and the Earth is at the end of the interglacial period that has allowed for the rise of human civilization in the past five thousand years or so. So, the fate of the polar bear is such that they are more likely to survive a new Ice Age than billions of humans in the northern hemisphere.
As should be obvious to everyone, the reduction of Arctic sea ice or the population of ringed seals has had no correlation whatever with the growth of the polar bear population. Indeed, if there hadn’t been a period of glaciation about 250,000 years ago and a bunch of formerly brown bears had not become isolated and had not adapted successfully, there would be no polar bears.
Further putting the lie to the Sierra Club and other environmental organization’s predictions is the fact that polar bears live in remote and inhospitable parts of the Arctic. In addition, they are not stationary, roaming over an area as large as two hundred square kilometers in search of tasty seals. Most of the time, humans can’t even visit or fly over the vast bulk of the Arctic to make any kind of count.
The Sierra Club has no idea how many polar bears actually exist in the Arctic and any claim that they are “endangered” is pure balderdash. I could use another word to describe such claims, but my Mother told me not to. So, to sum up, the Sierra Club is LYING about polar bears and you would be well advised to take anything else they have to say with a grain of Arctic Sea salt.

According to a new Climate Confidence Monitor survey released today, support for action on climate change is plummeting in Canada. Just 26% of Canadians consider global warming among their chief concerns, down from 34% in 2008.
Concern in the U.S. is even lower - just 18% , down from 26% in 2008. The UK’s level of concern is the lowest of all, a mere 15%, down from 26% in 2008.
Worldwide, the drop in concern over climate change has also dropped by 8 percentage points, from 42% to 34%.
The responses above, according to its report, reflect the “percentage of people who agree or strongly agree that climate change and how we respond to it are among the biggest issues that they worry about today.”
The Climate Confidence Monitor is produced by the HSBC Climate Partnership, comprised of organizations such as World Wildlife Fund, Earthwatch Institute and HSBC. See post here.

Book Review: CO2, Global Warming, and Species Extinctions: Prospects for the Future
By Dr. Craig D. Idso & Dr. Sherwood B. Idso
Review by Dr. Gary Sharp
“As a world traveling, empiricist with an extensive background in Genetics and Physiological Ecology, I found this ‘Critique’ of the recent decades’ over-selling of CO2 induced Global Warming, and subsequent Enhanced Rates of Species Extinction - to be long overdue.
This book is more than just a ‘contrarian commentary’. The series of systematic refutations, based on many diverse location’s empirical observations, comparing species numbers and distributions from the late 1800s, or within the 20th Century, clearly focused on the last thirty years ‘warming’, provide a far more realistic basis for outlining both future species level expectations, and their causes, than the poorly defensible ‘CO2 is Bad’ mob behavior.
The Idso’s long immersion in relevant plant physiology, relevant thermal, growth pattern changes, and nutritional responses to enhanced CO2, temperature changes, and other processes provides a strong foundation for their systematic analyses of known adaptations, and evolutionary responses of the various life forms, eg Birds, Butterflies, Amphibians, Marine Life, and Other Animals - based on the key physiological and behavioral options that each species has evolved - often in previous ‘dynamic climate change’ periods, and/or high/low CO2 periods.
The 23 pages of References from which their conclusions are derived provide both fact-based statements and refutation of the unsupported ‘fear mongering’ that is being pitched by various interests, that has swept under the table, the “Real World”’ issues, such as human-induced landscape perturbations; habitat issues such as pollution; and habitat loss due to urbanization.
The final Message in this book - about the misuse of agricultural production, and the switch to biofuel production, rather than enhanced food production, should be read and (hopefully) understood by everyone - as the ongoing human population growth that dominates these issues - requires maximization of food production. Basically, CO2 is the fundamental input that supports the wide range of primary production processes required. Decreasing/sequestering CO2 reverses these necessary production outputs, and threatens both mankind and Nature. - The Wrong Way to Go!”

It is no surprise that Mr Rudd’s CCS Institute thinks that Carbon Capture & Storage will not be viable for twenty years (The Australian 29th Oct 09). A viable business is one that gets no government favours or market guarantees, but earns profits selling products or services to willing buyers in an open market.
There is no evidence that burial of carbon dioxide will have any beneficial effects on climate. Moreover, reducing the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere will reduce plant growth and lower the ability of plants to cope with heat and drought. Under CCS, every tonne of coal burnt produces three tonnes of carbon dioxide for burial. Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant but the source of carbon for all plants, which sustain all animals. It is precious plant food. Sterilisation of this valuable natural resource produces community losses not benefits.
If you combine zero or negative benefits with huge capital and operating costs it is obvious that CCS can NEVER make a profit or be “viable”. Moreover, every three tonnes of carbon dioxide buried contains one tonne of carbon, the building block of all life on earth, plus two tonnes of oxygen, the gas of life for all animals.
All planets gradually lose their atmospheres by natural processes. To hasten that fatal day by deliberately burying essential life-supporting atmospheric gases is biological suicide. Spending billions of dollars on burial tombs for the gases of life is as useful to Australians as the pyramids were to the ancient Egyptians. All of these expensive carbon cemeteries with their gas collectors, compressors and long pipelines to remote burial facilities are destined to be abandoned and, like the pyramids, will stand as mournful monuments to the madness of the modern Pharaohs.
Carbon Capture and Burial is a non-viable idea. Let’s bury it.

I always find it interesting when activists and dissidents have neither formal scientific education, nor degrees in the exacting field of climatology. What they do have is a creepy, devoted following willing to do whatever they ask. Especially if that group believes only they can save the Earth.
Enter Jim McKibben. He’s the idea guy behind 350.org and is little more than an “American environmentalist and writer” who preys upon the uninformed and the easily influenced. In short, he targets the youth of the world who don’t have the the requisite experience to spot a charlatan.
McKibben lectures his impressionable followers on what he considers safe levels of carbon dioxide, then footnotes it all with end-of-the-world prognostications. Ibid, repeat. Even more worrying is that he specifically targets the world’s youth, exacerbating this group’s natural tendency to making risky chances, protest unconditionally, challenge authority, and place unconditional faith in a higher power. No, not God. McKibben.
“...analysts and activists detect a groundswell of anger, channelled through the Internet and voiced especially by the young, demanding action on global warming.” [source]
Happy with his grassroots organization, McKibbin boasts that his rank and file apostles are both educated and religious:
“It has worked beyond our wildest expectations,” McKibben told AFP. “We’ve basically got the whole world organised, much of it for the first time. October 24 is going to be, by a very large margin, the most widespread day of environmental action ever.”
Two demographic profiles dominate among 350.org’s rank-and-file, McKibben said: educated youth and people linked by religion.
“I was aware of climate change but didn’t know what I could do,” Gan Pei Ling, 22, a student at Tunku Abdul Rahman University in Malaysia, said this month at climate talks in Bangkok, where she had come to lobby negotiators. Meeting a small node of activists in Malaysia gave her the courage to speak out, and 350.org put her in touch with like-minded young people across Asia and beyond. Gan Pei Ling and hundreds of other 20-something activists who converged on Bangkok—many sporting T-shirts asking “How Old Will You Be in 2050?”—see global warming as an injustice toward the poor and the young.
“Older people don’t seem to care,” said Lokendra Shrestha, a 28-year-old sociology student from Nepal, where vanishing glaciers threaten much of Asia’s water supply. And for those who still doubt that global warming is NOT a religion, here’s a little perspective and some direct quotes: Religion is also emerging as a lightning rod.
“Climate has risen up massively as an issue of concern in religious communities,” said Stuart Scott, a former statistics professor from Hawaii who has crisscrossed the globe garnering support for his .
His cause got a big boost when the declaration was included in an ecumenical ceremony at the UN Nations last month ahead of the world’s first climate summit. “It would be a huge mobilising force if people started to frame the issue of climate change in religious terms,” noted Newell. Peter Newell, with a simpatico relationship to McKibbin, is a professor at the University of East Anglia in England. He also believes that anarchy begins at home: “As evidence mounts of the severity of the threat, civil society groups will be fuelled by the urgency of acting now to avoid the worse consequences of a problem for which future generations will surely hold us accountable...we can expect the continued and expanded use of all resources available to them—legal and non-legal, constructive and coercive, national, regional and international.”
A rule of war is turning the hearts and minds of the most vulnerable and convincing them your cause is right. It’s about creating apostates of rational thinking. It’s teaching the young that the science is settled, the debates are over, and the only thing left to do is convince more people the end is nigh.
In modern societies, we call this a cult. See more here.

EPW Minority Release
WASHINGTON, DC - Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, issued the following statement late Friday night after receiving incomplete analysis of the Kerry-Boxer cap-and-trade bill from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), along with the latest version of the Kerry-Boxer bill from Chairman Boxer.
“It’s not unreasonable to demand that a committee, prior to legislative hearings, would actually have the bill in question with adequate time for review and analysis. On top of that, one would think that, prior to legislative hearings, the committee would have a thorough, comprehensive economic analysis to understand how a 900-plus page bill, designed to fundamentally reshape the American economy, affects consumers, small businesses, farmers, and American families. But this is the clearly not the case. Instead, the majority prefers to keep this bill under wraps for the very straightforward reason that it will destroy jobs, stifle economic growth, and tax the energy Americans use every day.”

1. How does the linear warming in the last century of 0.44 deg C/100 years, shown above, compare with the linear warming two centuries ago?
2. Is the oscillating anomaly in the last century, after widespread use of fossil fuels, unusual?
3. What is the current trend in the mean global temperature anomaly?
Global cooling by 0.71 deg C from 1878 to 1911, for 33 years.
Global warming by 0.53 deg C from 1911 to 1944, for 33 years.
Global cooling by 0.48 deg C from 1944 to 1976, for 32 years.
Global warming by 0.67 deg C from 1976 to 1998, for 22 years.
It was unfortunate that the maximum of the oscillating anomaly occurred in 1998 near the end of the last century. This was just a coincidence. At the end of the last century, if the oscillating anomaly had been at its minimum, as in 1911 with an oscillating anomaly of -0.33 deg C, there would not have been any significant change in mean global temperature (0.44 - 0.33 = +0.11 deg C) in the last century.
Science is about the data. Science is not about consensus or authority. See post here
The linear global warming of the last century was similar to that of two centuries ago.
CO2 driven global warming is not supported by the data.

A powerful new film reveals how global warming activists cause economic destruction in the United States while they unwittingly spread misery and death around the world. Commencing a full blown attack on the hypocrisy and ill-conceived policies of the modern environmental movement, Not Evil Just Wrong is a feature length documentary that shows how extreme environmentalism is damaging the lives of the most vulnerable populations in the developed and developing world. With examples from Indiana to Uganda the film shows how Global Warming “solutions” will destroy jobs and livelihoods in America during one of the biggest recessions in living memory.
In time for the world premiere at 8pm on October 18th, DVDs can be pre-ordered here. Bypassing the Hollywood barriers to mass distribution, pre-ordered Not Evil Just Wrong DVDs will arrive in mailboxes in time for a coordinated attempt to break the world record for “largest simultaneous DVD movie premiere” on Sunday, October 18th, 2009, at 8pm.
“This is a film that Hollywood doesn’t want anyone to see because it uncovers the dirty truth of extreme environmentalism,” states the film’s co-director and producer, Phelim McAleer. “Our film is an attempt to spread this truth across America so that this issue, which threatens to damage so many lives and jobs, finally gets the debate it deserves.
“Documentary film co-director and producer Ann McElhinney invites everyday Americans to “Help us expose the true cost of global warming hysteria and become a part of cinematic history by making sure a documentary that finally tells the truth about their lives is shown across the nation.” “CO2 is the new DDT. Environmentalists want to ban it without any firm scientific basis or any consideration of the effect a ban on fossil fuels will have on the lives of working Americans.” says McElhinney.
The film sweeps back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean, starting in the United States. It examines the history of environmentalism, rooted in Rachel Carson’s famed 1962 book, Silent Spring, which led to a ban on DDT. This ban was disastrous for people in the developing world because DDT was the cheapest and safest way of combating malaria. An estimated 30 million people died when the DDT ban left them vulnerable to malaria. Not Evil Just Wrong exposes the full impact of robust and crushing environmental restrictions on the people of Uganda, before returning back to the United States to see how those same policies could impact American families in small towns like Vevay, Indiana.
Not Evil Just Wrong also shreds outrageous claims made in Al Gore’s award-winning film, An Inconvenient Truth, and rips apart academics and actors alike as they promote bad science to raise money for “green” initiatives.
Here is their invitation to you:
Dear Friends:
We are ready to make history together.
Not Evil Just Wrong, the groundbreaking documentary film we have been working on for more than 3 years will debut worldwide on October 18.
It’s not a traditional Hollywood premiere but an unprecedented, simultaneous private viewing in homes, churches and other gatherings all over America.
This email is your official invitation to take part in this historic event.
This is the documentary that exposes Al Gore and his global warming crusade. Exposes his distortions of science. Exposes his cynical fear mongering aimed at school children across the world. Exposes the risk he and other climate change radicals are posing to our liberty, our livelihoods and our nation’s future.
We predict this film will be a turning point in our struggle to stop suicidal policies like cap and trade. We believe the release is the next logical step in the grassroots “taxpayer revolt” that started on Tax Day last spring and led to one million frustrated Americans gathering in Washington a few weeks ago.
We ask you to order your copy of Not Evil Just Wrong today in time to view this film with millions of others who will see the power of this documentary. (We think you will be present at the event historians will call the beginning of the end of America’s love affair with Al Gore’s climate hysteria.)
More than that, we are asking you to purchase extra copies to help make sure thousands and potentially millions of other Americans can see this amazing film on October 18. Especially young people, college and high school students who have been forced to watch An Inconvenient Truth and spoon-fed global warming propaganda in their classrooms.
Your investment today can help get Not Evil Just Wrong onto hundreds of college, high school and other campuses where it is desperately needed. This investment could well help change your country’s future.
Take a few moments right now to see for yourself the power of this film by watching this preview.
After you’ve seen the preview, order your personal copy, join the national viewing experience on October 18 and PLEASE help us get this film out to young people across America.
Thank you!
Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer

We appreciate your financial support to continue our educational and informational efforts! Most of the dollars we get to keep going, come as small donations from individuals. No amount is too small. As a 501(c)(3) public charity, ICECAP, your donations are fully tax deductible. All donations are kept confidential. If you have browsed our website or utilized our material in the past year, please consider making a financial contribution. We know most of us are feeling the financial stress thanks to government and institution mismanagement of the economy. It can only get worse unless we can get the message out and stop the downward spiral. See the donate button on the left column.
