Mann Demonstrates That He Doesn’t Know Much About Paleoclimates
By Steven Goddard, Real Science

Some events, such as the 2003 European heat wave which killed about 35,000 people and this year’s heat wave in Moscow would be “extremely unlikely to happen in the absence of climate change,”

In other words, he is unaware of the heat wave of 1858 in London.

Another False Climate Change Eco-Scare: Hunger and Malnutrition

Hockey Schtick

image

The billboard ad above leads one to believe that ‘man-made’ climate change is increasing 3rd world hunger and that donations to Oxfam are necessary to build “floating vegetable gardens” and to “keep their heads above water.” But, let’s look at the facts instead. Percentage of malnourished individuals in developing nations is now less than half that of the 1969-1971 cold period:

Enlarged table here.

Despite ‘climate change,’ famine has declined rapidly in the 20th century (see multiple references in this poster from Bjorn Lomborg), and world agricultural production is projected to increase from 1800 Mt to 3900 Mt by the end of the 21st century (ML Parry et al, 2004:64 in Lomborg poster). Also note, flooding is 10 times more common during periods of global cooling than periods of global warming, and that global sea levels have been rising since the last ice age, at a currently decelerating rate of only 7 inches per century. Please also note, CO2 is airborne plant fertilizer. See post here.

Let’s Deal in Science and Facts

Letter by Armstrong, Green and Soon in WSJ

Bjorn Lomborg ("Can Anything Serious Happen in Cancun?”, op-ed, Nov. 12) claims that government spending on global warming policies is wasted, but he assumes that global warming caused by carbon dioxide is a fact. It is not. We base this statement not on the opinions of 31,000 American scientists who signed a public statement rejecting this warming hypothesis (the “Oregon Petition"), but rather because the forecasts of global warming were derived from faulty procedures.

We published a peer-reviewed paper showing that the forecasting procedures used by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change violated 72 of 89 relevant principles (e.g., “provide full disclosure of methods"). The IPCC has been unable to explain why it violated such principles. In response, we developed a model that follows the principles. Because the climate is complex and poorly understood, our model predicts that global average temperatures will not change.

In testing the models on global temperature data since 1850, we found that the long-range (91-to-100-years ahead) forecast errors from the IPCC’s projection were 12 times larger than the errors from our simple model.

Mr. Lomborg concludes there are better ways for governments to spend the funds devoted to global warming. We suggest this money should instead be returned to taxpayers.

Hulme on Climategate anniversary

Climate: Hulme Climate: other Mike Hulme is in the Guardian today, looking at the impact of Climategate, one year on. I’m not sure why everyone is doing their anniversary pieces today - isn’t the anniversary tomorrow (or even Thursday)?

Hulme’s piece is very thoughtful. I liked this bit particularly:

The simple linear frame of “here’s the consensus science, now let’s make climate policy” has lost out to the more ambiguous frame: “What combination of contested political values, diverse human ideals and emergent scientific evidence can drive climate policy?” The events of the past year have finally buried the notion that scientific predictions about future climate change can be certain or precise enough to force global policy-making.

I’m not sure that most people on the activist wing of the climate science community are in agreement with the last bit, but if true it’s certainly welcome. Also worth saying that it’s not obvious to me that the climate is something we really need a policy on at all.

Lom-Gore-borg: Paint it white
By Steve Milloy, CFP

I see a black road and I want it painted white.

In a Washington Post op-ed today, that “septical environmentalist,” Bjorn Lomborg, advocated whitewashing roof-tops and streets to reflect sunlight in hopes of reducing the alleged warming impacts of manmade greenhouse gas emissions. In support of his proposal, Lomborg cited a recent paper by Hashem Akbari estimating that every 100 square feet of black surface painted white would offset one ton of carbon dioxide emitted. Akbari estimates that if all urban roof-tops and streets were painted white, about 44 billion tons of CO2-equivalent would be offset. Akbari claims this would offset the effect of the growth in emissions rates for 11 years.

Akbari estimates that roof-tops and streets cover about 910 billion square meters of the Earth’s surface. Given the coverage of a gallon of paint (about 400 square feet or 37.2 square meters), it would only take about 27 billion cans of paint (allowing for 10 percent waste) to do the job. This would be great for the paint industry which only sells about 630 million gallons of paint annually in the U.S. And of course, once we finish painting the world white, it will be time for another coat. BTW, it costs about $8 per gallon to dispose of paint, about $20 billion for the amount of paint at issue.

Lomborg concludes his op-ed with,

“Obviously, whether it involves dikes or buckets of white paint, adaptation is not a long-term solution to global warming. Rather, it will enable us to get by while we figure out the best way to address the root causes of man-made climate change. This may not seem like much, but at a time when fears of a supposedly imminent apocalypse threaten to swamp rational debate about climate policy, it’s worth noting that coping with climate change is something we know how to do.

So Lomborg apparently wants us to spend trillions of dollars continually whitewashing the world while “we” figure out how to address those “root causes of man-made climate change.” Of course, Lomborg has already decided what needs to be done:

“Ultimately, we’re not going to solve any of these problems until we figure out a way to stop pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.”

Meet the new Al Gore. Same as the old Al Gore.

Happy Anny, ClimateGate!
By Chris Horner

This week brings us to the one-year mark since the global warming industry experienced ClimateGate. That release of emails and computer code and annotations was less a wooden stake through the heart of ‘climate science’ (there is apparently no ‘blue dress moment’, as I wrote at the time that would cause the US media to stop covering for the movement), but more like stepping on a rusty old nail whose impact will prove fatal in the end.

Ever adaptable, they are opting to proceed through the social sciences, analyizing and hopefully marginalizing us skeptics they just can’t get away with, er, ‘denying’ anymore. This is probably the latest cover for their ritual ad hominem, which is all you’ve got when you can’t make a persuasive substantive case. We’ll see, as a proliferation of hints about other such overtures indicates a considered strategic move. But I write about their opening salvo, as reported in yesterday’s NYT and focusing on yours truly, in the Daily Caller, here.

David Henderson: Deutsche Bank’s Green Politics

David Henderson, GWPF

In relation to climate change issues, two recent initiatives on the part of the Deutsche Bank Group give grounds for concern.

(1) In September, the Bank’s ‘Climate Change Advisors’ issued a document entitled Climate Change: Addressing the Major Skeptic Arguments: it was authored by three climate scientists at Columbia University. In an editorial introduction, the Bank’s Global Head of Climate Change Investment Research describes it as “a balanced, detailed and expert assessment of the scientific case for climate change that will help investors navigate these extremely complex issues”.

The document’s claims to accuracy as a navigational guide were promptly put in question by Ross McKitrick, one of the ‘skeptics’ supposedly disposed of within it. McKitrick’s paper, entitled Response to Misinformation from Deutsche Bank, is dated 12 September. It identifies and spells out an array of errors and misrepresentations.

In response, the authors of the document have now put out a new text which supersedes the original. In this new version they have added a three-page Response to McKitrick where they admit to a few ‘mischaracterizations’ and offer amended versions of three sentences that they acknowledge to have been misleading. However, the original wording of these faulty sentences remains unchanged and unfootnoted in an unaltered main text: McKitrick has described this behaviour as ‘unsporting’, while others might characterise it as unprofessional.

In a second piece, dated 8 November, McKitrick has responded to the revised report. In this paper he extends and reinforces his critique. Viewed together, his twin presentations appear as unanswerable. As a guide to investors, or indeed for any other purpose, the document is worthless.

It would be interesting to know whether the Deutsche Bank officials who sponsored and approved this deeply flawed initiative took the precaution of submitting a draft for expert review to persons not already firmly convinced that the ‘skeptics’ have been refuted.

Looking at the list, it would seem that no such person is to be found among the eminent individuals who make up the Deutsche Bank’s Climate Advisory Board: all appear as people who are (to quote a nice phrase from Clive Crook) ‘precommitted to the urgency of the climate cause’. A more representative Board, spanning a wider range of opinions. might have taken more trouble to ensure that any published work issued under its auspices would measure up to professional standards.

(2) In the recent Californian elections, voters were invited to accept or reject Proposition 23, which would have placed strict constraints on the state government’s plans to introduce further curbs on CO2 emissions. A few days before the vote, a Financial Times report noted that:

‘Sixty-eight big investors, managing $415bn in assets, have united to urge Californians to vote against efforts to roll back the state’s carbon legislation ... Signatories include ... Deutsche Bank Climate Advisers ...’

If this report is correct, it would seem that its Climate Advisory Board took a strong position on the Bank’s behalf on a controversial political matter.

As its website confirms, Deutsche Bank is fully is committed to Corporate Social Responsibility. How far its current handling of climate change issues can be judged to be responsible is open to debate.

Professor David Henderson is the Chairman of the GWPF’s Academic Advisory Council. His latest publication on climate change issues has just appeared in the quarterly Newsletter of the Royal Economic Society.

Mann’s hypocritical defense in New Scientist

By Michael Mann

Professional climate change deniers’ crusade continues

In the media and the courts, the battle to undermine climate science and its researchers hasn’t let up, warns climatologist Michael Mann.

I’D LIKE to say I was surprised when news broke a year ago that emails from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, UK, had been hacked into and leaked, and that scientists’ personal emails were being quoted out of context to disingenuously imply impropriety on their part. But I wasn’t.

Books such as Merchants of Doubt by science historians Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway (ICECAP Note: Oh brother, Mann references the other most discredited alarmsists) have detailed how front groups for the fossil-fuel industry have been waging an orchestrated, well-funded campaign against climate science and climate scientists for more than two decades. Hacking into the CRU’s email was simply the latest skirmish in this war against science, timed to forestall any progress towards lowering carbon emissions at the Copenhagen climate conference being held about a month later.

In January this year, the state of Virginia swore in Ken Cuccinelli as its attorney general. Cuccinelli was already known to have a radical agenda that included trying to end protection of the rights of gay college students. This agenda soon proved to extend in other directions, too.

In February, Cuccinelli filed a request with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about its findings that greenhouse gases endanger public health. He said that he was also looking for judicial review in the federal court. As his press statement explained, he took issue with “unelected bureaucrats with political agendas”, who, he alleged, were using “falsified” data to regulate US industry and destroy the economy.

A few weeks later, on 1 April, Cuccinelli announced - and despite the date, he wasn’t joking - that he planned to challenge the March 2010 standards on fuel efficiency for cars and trucks that had been finalised by the Obama administration and the EPA. He also issued a civil subpoena to my former employer, the University of Virginia, demanding that they hand over 10 years’ worth of emails and documents of mine, including correspondence with more than 30 other leading climate scientists.

The intent was clear: in my view, it was to uncover yet more emails that climate change deniers hoped would further embarrass climate scientists.

So why the ongoing attacks against me by Cuccinelli and other groups and individuals doing the bidding of the fossil fuel industry? Undoubtedly, it is because of the prominent role our now decade-old “hockey stick” reconstruction of past temperature trends has played in public discourse on climate change. The graphic, which I helped to create while I was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Massachusetts, tells a simple story: that the warming of recent decades is unprecedented in at least a millennium. This has made it a compelling icon in the climate change debate. It has also made the graphic a compelling target for climate change deniers, who believe that they can discredit all climate science by undermining the credibility of this one graphic.

The problem for them, however, is that dozens of groups, using different statistical methods, different data sources, and so on, have all come to the same conclusion as our study: recent warming is anomalous in a long-term context. In fact, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its 2007 report extended the period of warming back even further to at least the past 1300 years.

Moreover, the case for human influence on climate change hardly rests on our palaeoclimate research, or even on the entire field of palaeoclimatology. It is based, instead, on multiple lines of evidence and, in particular, the match between modern observations and the predictions of simulations using climate models.

The case for human influence on climate change rests on multiple lines of evidence

In August, Judge Paul M. Peatross ruled in Virginia’s Albermarle county circuit court that the attorney general had not demonstrated any wrongdoing on my part, and set aside Cuccinelli’s subpoena. That was a good day for my colleagues and me, the university, and for science. The decision was celebrated by scientific, academic and civil liberty organisations across the country.

Sadly, on 4 October, Cuccinelli returned to the fray with another civil subpoena going over similar ground. He targeted a single internal University of Virginia research grant. The grant in question had nothing to do with the “hockey stick” work, or even climate change; it was for the investigation of interactions between land, atmosphere and vegetation in the African savannah. That Cuccinelli would try to argue that the funding of this grant allows him to go on a fishing expedition to trawl through 10 years’ worth of email in an effort to discredit the hockey stick work speaks to the strength of his beliefs.

Fortunately, individuals and organisations of conscience have spoken up. The Washington Post blasted Cuccinelli’s latest actions as an “embarrassment” to the great state of Virginia, and quoted Rachel Levinson, senior counsel with the American Association of University Professors, as saying that Cuccinelli’s request had “echoes of McCarthyism”.

Cuccinelli’s actions also underscore the remarkable disconnect between the rhetoric of climate change denialism and reality. While professional climate change deniers continue their crusade against climate science, this year is likely to go down as either the warmest or the second warmest on record.

U.S. Carbon Futures Fall as Obama Cools to CO2 Market

By Simon Lomax, Bloomberg

Nov. 3 (Bloomberg)—Futures contracts in the U.S. Northeast’s carbon market fell to their lowest level in six weeks after President Barack Obama backed away from the national cap-and-trade program he once sought.

“Cap-and-trade was just one way of skinning the cat,” Obama said at a White House news conference today, one day after the Democratic Party lost control of the House of Representatives to Republicans.

The Democratic president said a cap-and-trade program, in which companies buy and sell carbon dioxide allowances, is “not the only way” to cut greenhouse gases. “I’m going to be looking for other means to address this problem,” Obama said.

Permits from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative for December delivery fell 2 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $1.88 each at on the Chicago Climate Futures Exchange, matching a record low closing price set on Sept. 22. Each permit, also called an allowance, gives a power plant the right to emit one ton of carbon dioxide. The state-run carbon trading program covers plants from Maryland to Maine.

U.S. Northeast carbon prices have fallen 18 percent this year as cap-and-trade legislation, which Obama asked Congress to pass in his February 2009 budget proposal, stalled in the Senate after narrowly passing the Democrat-controlled House.

Record Low

Prices today touched $1.85, a record intraday low that was below the minimum allowable bid of $1.86 in carbon dioxide allowance auctions held by the Northeastern states every quarter. The price of Northeast permits has been “propped up by some confidence that they could be converted into federal allowances” if legislation establishing a national cap-and- trade system passed Congress, said Peter Shattuck, a carbon markets policy analyst at Rockport, Maine-based advocacy group Environment Northeast.

A federal carbon market is now “more remote” than before the election because “the vast majority of Republicans have opposed cap-and-trade proposals to date,” Shattuck said in a telephone interview. Read more here.

The science and economics of global warming are not too complicated for the average person to consider and make up his or her own mind. We urge you to do that. Go here and view some of the articles linked under “What’s New” or “A Primer on Global Warming.” Or go here and read about the new report from the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC), which comprehensively rebuts the claims of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Go here for the sources for the factual statements in the ads.
