An educational computer game in which users have to save the world from climate change offers an interesting solution - decide the problem is overpopulation and design a virus to kill millions.
The game takes you forward 200 years to see the outcome of your decisions, including whether major species such as the polar bear have been condemned to extinction Photo: PHOTOLIBRARY
Fate of the World goes on sale on Tuesday and has been praised by gaming experts and climate campaigners as a way of reaching new audiences in the fight against carbon emissions.
However, climate change sceptics may be surprised and angered by some of the strategies on offer in the game which is being released on PCs and Apple Macs.
As the head of a fictional international body the user must save the world from soaring temperatures, increasing floods and deadly droughts.
The game, developed by Red Redemption, an Oxford-based design company, uses real data and input from scientists and has best been described as a Football Manager for eco-enthusiasts.
Users are presented with a budget, environmental data, and a series of energy policies which range from emissions caps and investment in biofuels to continue investing in fossil fuels.
Other more extreme policies are also available such as creating a disease to reduce the world’s population or geoengineering, such as cloud seeding from planes.
The game, described on its website as a “dramatic global strategy game”, takes you forward 200 years to see the outcome of your decisions, including whether major species such as the polar bear have been condemned to extinction.
The blurb reads: “You must manage a balancing act of protecting the Earth. Resources and climate versus the needs of an ever-growing world population, who are demanding ever more food, power, and living space. Will you help the whole planet or will you be an agent of destruction?”

But the brunt of the evening’s talk focused on climate change, a topic Cameron and his interviewer, Google chief executive Eric Schmidt, share as a passion. In between making the “Avatar” sequels, Cameron plans to make TV and cinema documentaries about climate change.
Cameron said a two-degree temperature change in the world’s oceans “will take out all the coral reefs. Sixty percent of species could be extinct in this century with climate change,” he added.
“It’s highly unlikely there will be [a carbon] cap and trade [law] in the next six years, so we have six more years of inaction on putting a price on carbon emissions, and that’s a fundamental problem,” said Schmidt who serves on a panel of science and technology advisors to U.S. President Obama.
“All the modeling says even with the current modest reductions we are nowhere near the needed 60-70 percent reductions in carbon emissions” to halt climate change, Schmidt said. “In my view is its going to take some kind of event and a conversation among leaders [to motivate policy change], and I don’t think it will happen soon,” he added.
“It’s probably the toughest challenge the human race has ever faced,” said Cameron whose blockbuster movie was in part a statement about the need for greater environmental awareness. “I believe ultimately this has to be approached as a children’s crusade,” he said.

Romm and friends are constantly whining about an imagined increase in extreme weather, but as usual, they have no clue what they are talking about.
In the US, the 1930s had nearly as much extreme weather as all other decades combined. In fact, the past decade (2000-2009) may have had the least extreme weather.
Twenty three states set their record high temperature in the 1930s, compared with one during the past decade.
Eleven states set their low temperature record in the 1930s, compared with none during the past decade.
Dr. Hansen described droughts in the 1930s :
Empirical evidence does not lend much support to the notion that climate is headed precipitately toward more extreme heat and drought. The drought of 1999 covered a smaller area than the 1988 drought, when the Mississippi almost dried up. And 1988 was a temporary inconvenience as compared with repeated droughts during the 1930s “Dust Bowl” that caused an exodus from the prairies, as chronicled in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath.
The most powerful hurricane to ever hit the US was the Great Labor Day Storm of 1935. It was the only storm to ever hit the US with a pressure lower than 900 mb, and may have had winds as high as 185 MPH at landfall.
The conclusion is that extreme weather has not increased, but extreme whining and whiners have.

"Climate change journalism has gotten worse,” says Dr. Ben Santer, researcher at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, and one of the world’s top scientists studying the attribution of climate change.
...
As if it wasn’t enough for the media to treat information vital to our future so lightly, they have also helped to spread unfounded accusations of fraud against climate researchers. Scientists are people just like anyone else, and should not be subject to such harassment. “These attacks on people like Phil Jones,” Dr. Santer agrees, “had tremendous personal cost. He was nearly driven to suicide by the hatred that he encountered.”
...
Who goes into scientific research expecting death threats? “[Jones] has done more than almost anyone in the world to improve our knowledge of observed changes in the temperature of planet Earth,” says Santer. “He was not deserving of this kind of treatment.
“So much attention was devoted to some incautious phrases in these emails, rather than to ask, “What kind of pressure has this guy been labouring under and operating under for years now? What sort of systematic attack by Freedom of Information Act has he been trying to deal with?
...
“These fringe voices now have megaphones,” he continues, “and have means of amplifying their voices and trumpeting shoddy, incorrect science. We’ve seen the rise of the blogs, we’ve seen the rise of these “independent public auditors” who believe that they have carte blanche to investigate anyone who produces results they don’t agree with, and if that individual doesn’t comply with their every request, they indulge in this persecution campaign on their blogs and make your life very uncomfortable. I’ve had direct personal experience with that.
...
“The sad thing is that many folks don’t want to know about the science at all. They just want to have business as usual and really not consider even the possibility that we might be changing the climate of planet Earth, that they might be culpable in that, and that they might need to think about the future.
See post here.
Icecap Note: Santer has been one of the leaders of the perversion of science. He is either a consummate lier or suffering from serious cognitive dissonance.

Policy Based Evidence Making

Last winter had the largest sea ice extent in the last six years, the largest North American snow cover on record, and the second largest northern hemisphere snow extent on record. On one day in February, at least 49 US states had snow cover. Northern hemisphere albedo was very high last winter.
What did NOAA and the Army Corps of Engineers have to say about that? They ignored the evidence and went straight to the press with unsupportable remarks.
Last winter’s massive snowstorms that struck the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states were tied to higher Arctic temperatures, climate scientists reported Thursday.
“As we lose more sea ice it’s a paradox that warming in the atmosphere can create more of these winter storms,” Overland said at a news briefing.
There is a powerful connection between ice cover and air temperatures, Richter-Menge explained. When temperatures warm, ice melts. When reflective ice melts it reveals darker surfaces underneath, which absorbs more heat. That, in turn, causes more melting “and on the cycle goes,” she said.
Another effect of the increasing temperatures is that the sea ice extent is dropping to one of the lowest levels on record.
Had their been a lack of snow and sea ice last winter, these same people would have undoubtedly blamed that on global warming. The result of the research is predetermined - evidence is irrelevant.

This weeks edition of the Economist includes the following article:
Greening Oz - The government considers a carbon tax
EVER since she was elected prime minister six weeks ago, Julia Gillard has been under pressure to restore the ruling Labor Party’s credibility on climate change. Relying on coal to generate about 80% of its electricity makes Australia one of the biggest greenhouse-gas emitters per head. Labor’s decision to abandon an earlier pledge for a European-style emissions-trading scheme (ETS) cost it seats at an election in August. Ironically it also left Ms Gillard relying on support from the Australian Greens to form a minority government.
Ms Gillard has now ditched a much-lampooned election promise to establish a “citizens’ assembly” to discuss climate change. Instead, she has appointed a multiparty parliamentary committee to decide how Australia should make its worst carbon polluters pay. A report this week by the Climate Institute, a Sydney-based think-tank, suggests how hard that will be: comparing Australia with five of its main trading partners, only South Korea has done less to factor the cost of carbon emissions into its electricity prices.
The Greens are claiming credit for Ms Gillard’s new climate concern. Some also detected their influence when she announced on October 18th a more moderate approach to another divisive election issue: the increasing numbers of asylum-seekers arriving in Australia by boat. Those with children will no longer be incarcerated, but allowed to live freely while their claims are assessed. The Greens have long called for such a change; Ms Gillard claimed it as her party’s idea.
The climate committee must decide by late 2011 the best way to put a price on greenhouse-gas emissions: an ETS, a carbon tax or a hybrid of both. The Greens have two representatives on it, including Bob Brown, their leader. Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott, two independents whose price for supporting Ms Gillard included a revival of climate-change action, are also on the committee. Only the opposition Liberal-National coalition is absent. Its leader, Tony Abbott, rejected Ms Gillard’s invitation to join. He has previously dismissed climate science as “crap” and the mooted mitigation measures as just a “great big tax”. Yet this populism has left him looking suddenly rather isolated.
To help it think through the economic impact of a carbon tax, or similar measure, the government is consulting many of the country’s top businessmen -including former allies of Mr Abbott. This is encouraging, but the task of greening Australia is huge. According to the Climate Institute, Australia is the G20 country that is worst-prepared to compete in a low-carbon economy. Its report compares the additional costs imposed on electricity producers in six countries by anti-warming strategies, including carbon taxes, emission-trading schemes and clean-energy subsidies.
In Australia, such measures represented an effective carbon tax of $1.70 per tonne - a figure 17 times lower than in Britain and eight times lower than in China, on the basis of a perhaps-generous interpretation of China’s efforts to make its coal-fired power stations more efficient. Only South Korea’s hidden carbon price of 70 cents was lower. One of the report’s authors, Cameron Hepburn, reckons that China will “almost certainly” adopt a national ETS or some alternative measure before Australia does.
I have responded as follows:
“KiwiBuzz
How can a supposedly reputable publication like The Economist continue to call carbon dioxide a “pollutant”. The commonsense definition of a pollutant is something harmful that we would be better off without. Carbon dioxide is vital to life. The increase in carbon dioxide concentration over the last 100 years has, for certain, increased agricultural production. Greenhouses operate at 900 ppm (2.5 times the current level) and thereby increase production by 40%. If carbon dioxide concentration dropped below about 180 ppm, our very existence would be at risk.
Six months ago, the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) made a sudden major switch from El Nino to La Nina conditions. A careful analysis of the SOI of and global temperatures by Maclean, Carter and deFreitas showed that global temperatures follow the SOI with the time lag of between five and eight months. On this basis, I predict that, by the end of the year, there will be a sudden drop in global temperatures as measured by satellite.
Other research shows that, worldwide, temperatures correlate closely with the length of the preceding sunspot cycle. The sunspot cycle that just ended lasted 12.5 years while the previous one was unusually short at 9.5 years. In the past, a 3 year increase has resulted in a cooling of 1-1.5C. We can expect The world to cool by 1 - 1.5C over the next decade.
The the plain fact is that climate changes naturally In response to natural cycles that we do not yet fully understand. It will continue to do so.
The biggest climate change risk faced by the world is that of severe natural cooling. The only thing that will be achieved by carbon tax (and monstrous subsidies for expensive and virtualy useless wind and solar power) is to make the economies of the world less able to cope with global cooling. In general, it will be the poorer people who suffer most.
It is high time The Economist followed the example of the Royal Society and reviewed its stand on climate change.”
I suggest that everyone who has access to The Economist do likewise. If we could persuade The Economist to be a bit more open-minded it could have a very large effect on influential opinion.

Read here. The failures of the IPCC’s climate models are wide and deep. While the models focus on the atmosphere warming the oceans via human CO2 emissions, at the bottom of the seas geological activity is taking place, for the most part unseen, spewing heat and gases into the water undetected.
Unfortunately, climate models do not include the reality of massive crustal, seabed activity, and as a result, this lack of model inclusion contributes to the continuous model incapablity of predicting future climate scenarios with any degree of accuracy.
“Scientists from the MARUM Center for Marine Environmental Sciences and the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen on board the German research vessel Meteor have discovered a new hydrothermal vent 500 kilometres south-west of the Azores. The vent with chimneys as high as one meter and fluids with temperatures up to 300 degrees Celsius was found at one thousand metres water depth in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The discovery of the new deep-sea vent is remarkable because the area in which it was found has been intensively studied during previous research cruises....."Our results indicate that many more of these small active sites exist along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge than previously assumed,” said Dr. Nicole Dubilier, the chief scientist of the expedition. “This could change our understanding of the contribution of hydrothermal activity to the thermal budget of the oceans.”

Dr Wolfgang Thuene, The Weatherman
Germany has yet another sceptic website, published by meteorologist Dr Wolfgang Thuene called Der Wettermann. I’ll be keeping an eye on it and reporting on interesting posts that will undoubtedly pop up.
There are many sceptics in Germany. The problem is that the mainstream media and well-funded post-normal climate science establishment marginalise them. But they won’t be able to keep this up for much longer.
Dr Thuene is retired. He was a weatherman at the German Weather Service and former weatherman at ZDF television. He’s a harsh critic of the the AGW hypothesis and does not mince words.
In a post written last month, he expresses his view on man’s attempt to control nature and climate.
“[Climate] is the sum of single values that form a mean. You can calculate it as a guiding value, which is what a lot of ideologues in society are now doing. But the idea of telling nature and weather how to behave, within which boundaries it is allowed to move, between which guardrails the global temperature has to remain, is just complete madness and hubris that cannot be exceeded. The calculated global mean temperature does not create a global climate, a state that one can declare as a good to be protected. A calculated and abstract human being, using a standard height, standard weight, standard intelligence and standard life expectancy, remains only a fiction of thought, and simply cannot be a standard for the 7 billion people living on the planet. The salaries of climate economists and scientists really ought to be reduced to the “global salary”, just so that they wake up to the nonsense they are purporting.
Dr. Thune was also featured in the German sceptic documentary film: Der Klima-Schwindel - How the Eco-Mafia Is Taking Us To The Cleaners. It should be noted that the film was never shown by the networks.
