Lieberman-Kerry bill predicated on a lie
Temperatures have been warmer than today for almost all of the past 10,000 years
By Robert Felix

27 May 10 - The revamped cap-and-trade (control-and-tax) bill that Senators Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.) are trying to foist on the American public is predicated on a flat-out lie.

The control-and-tax proponents would have you believe that our planet has been enduring unprecedented global warming (now coyly referred to as “climate change"), but the facts do not bear that out. Facts. Oh, those damnable facts.

Look at this chart.

image

Created by Cuffy and Clow in 1997, and based on Greenland ice core records, this chart shows global temperatures for the past 15,000 years.

You’ll see that today’s benign climate is not even close to being the warmest on record.

Not even close.

Temperatures have been warmer than today for almost all of the past 10,000 years.

In fact, if the chart went further back, you’d see that temperatures have been warmer than today for most of geologic history.

I sat just ten feet from Dr. Don Easterbrook, Professor of Geology at Western Washington University as he presented this chart, along with several of his own, at the Heartland Institute’s 4th International Conference on Climate Change in Chicago last week.

“Natural global warming much more intense than modern warming has occurred many times in the geologic past without CO2 change,” said Easterbrook.

The changes occurred rapidly, without any help from humans

“Fifteen thousand years ago, temperatures rose 10 to 20 degrees in just one century,” said Easterbrook.

About 12,800 years ago we plunged into the Younger Dryas, said Easterbrook. When we came out of the Younger Dryas, temperatures again shot upward, rising 15 degrees in just 40 years. Then, from about 10,000 years ago to 3,000 years ago, temperatures were warmer than today.

Forget human influence, said Easterbrook. Cooling and warming are both natural.

“Numerous, abrupt, short-lived warming and cooling episodes much more intense than recent warming/cooling occurred during the late Pleistocene, none of which could have been caused by changes in atmospheric CO2,” said Easterbrook.

“Twice as many people are killed by extreme cold than by extreme heat,” Easterbrook warned.

So let me ask you this.

Do we really want to pass a control-and-tax bill; do we really want to destroy our economy, based on the lie of “unprecedented global warming”?

Kerry: Gas Tax? What Gas Tax?

By Kate Sheppard, Mother Jones

Here’s a fabulous sneak peek into the climate bill negotiations. Yesterday Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) attempted to squash the idea he and his colleagues have ever contemplated including a gas tax in the climate bill. “There is no gas tax, never was a gas tax, will not be a gas tax, I don’t know where that came from, but it is just wrong. Period,” he told reporters. “There is not even a linked fee, there is not a tax, there is nothing similar.”

Pretty sure the idea came from… the bill’s coauthors. Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) discussed the prospect of a carbon fee on transportation fuels with reporters shortly before the April recess. “It’s on the table,” Lieberman said following a March 25 meeting with industry groups. And Graham explained that the oil industry favored a fuel fee if that would mean the industry wouldn’t be included under a hard cap on carbon.

It’s not entirely clear if what’s going on here is a rhetorical shift (nobody likes the word “tax” of course), or an actual policy change. This could be much like the whole “cap and trade is dead” dance the senators are performing, in which they declare the policy deceased while, in reality, some form of it will likely be included in their bill.

The senators are supposed to release a draft on Monday, but from everything I’m hearing on the Hill, there are still lots of loose ends to be tied up. Of course, the constant shifting has raised concerns about whether Kerry and his colleagues can deliver. As one industry source put it to Climate Wire last week:

“He’s literally trying to promise everything to everybody,” said one industry source close to the negotiations. “While his enthusiasm is appreciated, there’s grave doubts he can hold the promises he makes.” Read more here.

Bingaman, Dorgan Continue to Cry Crocodile Tears Over Offshore Revenue Sharing - Wonder What Their Position Is on ONSHORE Federal Revenue Sharing? NY Times/Greenwire (4/19) reports, “Three key Senate Democrats are urging their colleagues to reject a proposal in the emerging climate bill that would give a cut of oil and gas production royalties to states that allow offshore drilling. Sens. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico and Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia called “revenue sharing” an ill-advised “giveaway” of money that belongs to all U.S. citizens. “The fiscal consequences of such a loss would be devastating, particularly given the enormous demands on the federal Treasury and our need to reduce the deficit,” the trio wrote in a letter to fellow senators sent Friday and publicly released today. Dorgan and Bingaman’s opposition to revenue sharing is well-established. But by firing such a public salvo during sensitive negotiations on climate, the trio are complicating efforts to bring Republicans on board a climate bill.

------------------

Louisiana Fast: Sen. Landrieu Lets About 10 Seconds Pass Before Calling Out Bingaman and Dorgan for Exactly What They Are: Revenue Sharing Hypocrites. The Hill (4/19) reports, “Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) on Monday returned political fire at a trio of senior Democrats who don’t want coastal states to receive a guaranteed share of the revenues from oil-and-gas production in federal waters off their shores. Opponents of linking expanded offshore drilling to state revenue sharing fear depriving federal coffers of billions of dollars in lease bids and royalties. But Landrieu said that unless coastal states can share the money from expanded development to address the “impacts, drilling in new areas won’t happen anyway. “If there’s no drilling, the interior states get no money,” she told reporters in the Capitol. “And there is not going to be any drilling unless there is revenue sharing.” “They [interior states] can have 100 percent of zero, or they can have 65 to 75 percent of something huge. Now let them go figure it out,” she added. Landrieu, for her part, argues that the current system is unfair because onshore states get half the revenues from oil-and-gas leasing on federal lands within their boundaries

---------------------

While 71 Percent of Americans Oppose an Increase in the Gas Tax, Senator Graham Proclaims, “I’m in this to win.” Win what we ask? New York Times/E&E News (5/6) reports, “Sen. Lindsey Graham doesn’t sound like someone who’s abandoned the push to pass a global warming bill. Standing in the Senate’s historic Kennedy Caucus Room, the site of hearings on the sinking of the Titanic and Watergate, the South Carolina Republican told a room full of environmentalists and Obama administration officials Tuesday night that he is still in the fight to enact legislation that caps greenhouse gases and expands domestic energy production."I’m not playing the game to win 43 [votes],” he said, referring to the high-water mark of past Senate climate bill roll calls. “I’m not in this to make a statement. I’m in this to win.” Graham’s speech at the private event hosted by the Environmental Defense Fund took place in the same room he and Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) had reserved eight days earlier for a press conference to roll out their energy and climate bill—an event that got postponed when Graham protested over Democratic leadership’s insistence that immigration also belongs on the Senate agenda this year. Graham’s office didn’t comment as of press time on his status in the climate negotiations, leaving many to guess where he officially is. “I think it’s like the hokeypokey,” said Sen. Jon Cornyn (R-Texas). “You put your right foot in. You take your right foot out. I’m not sure where he is right now.” “He wants to do it,” said Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), an outspoken skeptic of climate science who has clashed with Graham on the climate issue. Inhofe noted that Graham’s involvement on the climate bill, along with immigration and closing the Guantanamo Bay military prison, is “all McCain stuff...”

This Guy is All Over the Place. One Day He’s the Ring Leader, Next Day He’s Out and Now “He’s Pausing.” One Thing Remains Clear: He Authored The Graham Gas Tax. E&E News (5/7, subs. req’d) reports, “Sen. Lindsey Graham sees himself as a possible 60th vote on the comprehensive energy and climate bill. But the South Carolina Republican doubts the debate will even get that far, at least in the current political atmosphere that includes a ripening battle over immigration and uncertainty over the causes of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Graham two weeks ago threw a major league curveball into the prospects for the climate bill when he backed out of seven months of negotiations...He blames the Obama administration and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) for playing politics on the climate bill...He also thinks the White House left him hanging when unnamed administration officials criticized what Fox News called “Graham’s gasoline tax gambit”—a reference to the “linked fee” idea that he had floated as a way to control greenhouse gas emissions from transportation fuels. For now, Graham says he has “paused” from the talks with Kerry and Lieberman… And that means he probably won’t be at the legislation’s unveiling, which is expected as early as next week. “He’ll be there in spirit and substance but probably not with us,” Lieberman said yesterday. On the oil spill, Graham said he is concerned the bill is losing ground because Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) earlier this week declared an expansion for offshore drilling “dead on arrival.” Graham said he is worried about the environmental catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico, but he does not see it as reason enough to stop drilling altogether.”

No climate staff to be axed despite U-turn

No climate staff to be axed despite U-turn. $12m a year salary bill for 408 public servants! Rent for new offices $8m!

image

TAXPAYERS will pay $90 million a year to keep 408 public servants employed in the Federal Climate Change Department - despite most of them now having nothing to do until 2013.

More than 60 of them are classified as senior executive staff on salaries between $168,000 and $298,000 a year. Their salary bill alone will cost an estimated $12 million every year.  A further $8 million will also be paid in rent for plush offices at Canberra ‘s Constitution Place until 2012, where it is believed 500 new computers will be delivered this week. Despite Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s decision on Tuesday to suspend the failed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme until at least 2013, the department has ruled out plans to cut back staff.

A formal response by department secretary Martin Parkinson to a Senate estimates hearing on Tuesday - the same day as the scheme’s suspension - claimed the department would not offer redundancies. The formal response, obtained by The Daily Telegraph, said there were no plans for “the immediate future” of any scaling back of staff.

According to official figures, the number of top-paid bureaucrats being paid up to $298,000 a year has almost doubled since January this year from 39 to 61. That was to gear up for establishment of the Australian Climate Change Regulatory Authority, which will also now have no function.
Since last year with climate change employees having risen from an initial 246 to 408.

Of the 61 senior agency officials, only nine have been inherited from the scrapped home insulation scheme. The majority, 38, were employed on the CPRS and a further 19 were employed on the renewable energy scheme which has also been axed. But none of the 408 staff within the department will be shed even though the department’s key function, the CPRS, has been axed. Its own tender documents reveal a lease contract of $16 million for its offices which expires in 2012.

Clearly the positions should have been eliminated and the building repurposed.

Special Report: Networks Hide the Decline in Credibility of Climate Change Science

By Julia A. Seymour, BMI

ABC, CBS and NBC ignore ClimateGate scandal and still advance left-wing global warming agenda.

It’s been a rough five months for the credibility of many of the “leading” climate scientists. First, the ClimateGate e-mails appeared to show unethical or illegal behavior of high profile scientists and a potential conspiracy to distort science for political gain. These weren’t just a few renegade scientists; in the following months, damning information came to light about the world’s leading climate alarmists and their work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Stern Report, the U.S. National Climate Data Center and even NASA.

Even with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day coming up on April 22, Americans are skeptical about the threat of climate change. A March 2010 Gallup poll found that 48 percent of Americans think the threat of global warming is “generally exaggerated.” That’s the highest in 13 years, according to Gallup. The public’s receding fear of climate change may be related to the series of scandals and admissions that have been uncovered since Nov. 20 when e-mails from University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) were leaked. Those e-mails provided “ammunition” to climate skeptics about the authenticity and ethics surrounding the CRU’s work on global warming science.

The networks news media were unshaken by the apparent bad behavior on the part of the very climate scientists and organizations whose claims they had pushed for years. Less than 10 percent of stories mentioning global warming or climate change since Nov. 20, 2009, referenced any of the climate science scandals. Read much more here.

Here is Your Chance to Respond Back to Alarmism Claims on Nature

Current pledges to reduce emissions are nowhere near enough to keep the planet’s warming to below 2C, argue Joeri Rogelj, Malte Meinshausen and colleagues in an Opinion piece in Nature this week. They analysed the pledges accompanying the Copenhagen Accord, taking into account major loopholes that are likely to make emissions worse.

The team concludes that even if nations halve their emissions by 2050, there is still a 50% chance that warming will exceed 2C by 2100. It is crucial, they argue, that a better, binding agreement is established.

Access this Opinion piece online, and have your say by joining the discussion on Nature’s new online commenting facility.

Malcolm Roberts comments

Former US Navy meteorologist Dr Martin Hertzberg (PhD in chemistry) debunks the radiative warming effect of CO2, quote: “They say that “greenhouse gases” absorb infrared (IR) energy emitted by the earth and cause warming. Yet, in comparison to water in all its forms (polar ice, snow cover, oceans, clouds, humidity), human CO2 emission is as significant for weather as a few farts in a hurricane. The earth’s IR energy absorbed by greenhouse gases is reradiated to free space as soon as it is absorbed. The notion that the colder air above can radiate energy back to heat the warmer air below violates the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. Heat flows spontaneously from a higher to a lower temperature, never the reverse. ... In truth, this entire notion of a “greenhouse effect” was shown as early as 1909 to be devoid of physical reality; that is, it simply doesn’t exist. Thus the greenhouse belongs in the outhouse: It is a load of crap!” (link). I’m recognising a pattern among those who debunk the greenhouse warming effect ‘theory’. Many are chemists. They understand molecular behaviour of gases under radiation and the laws of thermodynamics. The number of scientists who agree AND have the courage to say so in public seems to be growing.

New AMS Survey Results - 63% say climate change has mainly natural causes

Edward Maibach, George Mason University

This study was the largest and most representative survey of television weathercasters conducted to date. The on-line survey of broadcast television members of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and National Weather Association (NWA) was intended to be a census of the nation’s TV weathercasters. A total of 571 respondents completed at least some portion of the survey, a minimum response rate of 42%, and an adjusted response rate of 52%. While consultant research on TV weather and weathercasters abounds, most of that research is proprietary and often the weathercasters themselves don’t know the results of that research. Our top-line findings are being distributed directly to survey respondents and their professional associations, and additional detailed analyses are being prepared for submission to peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Weathercasters hold a wide range of beliefs about global warming. Survey participant responded to a variety of questions assessing their beliefs in and attitudes about “global warming,” questions that have been used previously in our public opinion research. More than half of our respondent (54%) indicated that global warming is happening, 25% indicated it isn’t, and 21% say they don’t know yet. About one-third (31%) reported that global warming is caused mostly by human activities, while almost two-thirds (63%) reported it is caused mostly by natural changes in the environment. Half indicated that they have thought “a lot” about global warming, and a large majority said they are fairly or very well informed about the causes of global warming (93%), the consequences of global warming (89%), and the ways to reduce global warming (86%) - numbers that are much higher than public responses to the same questions. Over half of weathercasters indicated that humans could reduce global warming (58%), and that the U.S. should reduce greenhouse gas emissions regardless of what other countries do (63%). Almost half (47%) felt they needed some or a lot more information before forming a firm opinion about global warming, and almost one-third (30%) said they could easily change their mind about global warming. Just
over one quarter (27%) agreed with the statement by a prominent TV weathercaster: “global warming is a scam.”

Only one third of TV weathercasters believe that there is a scientific consensus on climate change. Despite the strong scientific consensus among climate scientists, almost two-thirds (61%) of TV weathercasters think there is a"lot of disagreement among scientists about whether or not global warming is happening. Perhaps partly as a result, 79% of our respondents indicated that coverage of climate change science must reflect a “balance” of viewpoints just as coverage of political or social issues are covered. Prior research conducted by others, however, has shown that “balanced” news coverage about climate change is misleading in that it tends to give audience members the false impression that there is a lot of disagreement among scientists about whether or not global warming is happening.

Weathercasters express varying degrees of trust in sources of climate change information.
Overall the most trusted sources of climate change information are state climatologists (85%), the NWA (83%), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service (82%), peer-reviewed journals (80%), the AMS (79%) and climate scientists (73%). The least trusted climate sources were politicians (4%), religious leaders (11%), mainstream news media (18%), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (44%), and other TV weathercasters (53%).

See PDF of full results. Note: Only 6% were 60 years or older. The younger broadcasters don’t remember the heat of the 1930s-1950s, the cold of the 1960s to 1970s. The younger ones have been brainwashed by a school system that like the media pushed the green agenda and no longer real science. The modern day university college professors spoiled by money from the grant spigots, many originally from environmental organizations control the message the students hear. Still despite that enough of them think for themselves and thus the results of the survey. There are several skeptic TV meteorologists I know not asked to participate in this survey even though they did in prior AMS surveys. Maibach’s selection process must be questioned. Also his editorial comments sprinkled in among the results are inappropriate.

“We know who you are. We know where you live”

So Just Who is Threatening Violence?

This appears on the Greenpeace official blog, written by “Gene” from Greenpeace India:

The proper channels have failed. It’s time for mass civil disobedience to cut off the financial oxygen from denial and skepticism. If you’re one of those who believe that this is not just necessary but also possible, speak to us. Let’s talk about what that mass civil disobedience is going to look like.

If you’re one of those who have spent their lives undermining progressive climate legislation, bankrolling junk science, fueling spurious debates around false solutions, and cattle-prodding democratically-elected governments into submission, then hear this:

We know who you are. We know where you live. We know where you work.

And we be many, but you be few.

The Early Weather Channel Days and a Discussion of Global Warming
By Joe D’Aleo and Andre Bernier

Here more of an interview, I did with TV Meteorologist Andre Bernier of FOX 8 in Cleveland on Weatherjazz, who was a student of mine at Lyndon State College, and who by luck of the draw, was one of two on-camera meteorologists who did the first half hour of the Weather Channel (along with Bruce Edwards) on May 2, 1982. We talked about both the early days of the Weather Channel and global warming. The audio is here. See also episode 21 on November 10, 2009, when we talked about the upcoming winter.

The Science and Public Policy Institute (SPPI) - a DC think tank - has produced a science-based critique of a recent film produced by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The SPPI paper is entitled Acid Test: The
Global Challenge of Ocean Acidification - A New Propaganda Film by the National Resources Defense Council Fails the Acid Test of Real World Data. Walter Starck has written this story “Observations on Growth of Reef Corals and Sea Grass Around Shallow Water Geothermal Vents in Papua New Guinea” supporting the SPPI findings.

75% of American Meteorological Society Broadcasters Reject IPCC Man-made Climate Claims
By Bill Murray, Weather Historian, Alabamawx.com

A survey of weathercasters’ feelings on global warming was published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. It had some interesting findings. There were 121 respondents. 94% of the respondents had at least one of the three major seals.

Television meteorologists are the official scientists for most television stations. The overwhelming majority felt comfortable in that role for their stations. The majority agreed that the role of discussing climate change did fall to them.

The eyebrow raising responses:

“Respond to this IPCC conclusion: “Warming of the climate system is unequivocal.” Only 35% agreed or strongly agreed. 34% disagreed or strongly disagreed.

“Most of the warming since 1950 is likely human induced.” A full 50% disagreed or strongly disagreed. 25% were neutral on this question. Only 8% strongly agreed.

“Global climate models are reliable in their predictions for a warming of the planet.” Only 3% strongly agreed and another 16% agreed. A full 62% disagreed or strongly disagreed.

“Respond to one TV weathercaster’s Quote saying “Global warming is a scam.” Responses were mixed. The largest percentage was neutral, at 26%. A total of 45% disagreed (23%) or strongly disagreed (22%). 19% of the respondents agreed with this statement and 10% strongly agreed.

The amount of uncertainty found in this survey tells that even the most educated and motivated communicators are still uncertain about the truth on this issue. Interesting article.

ICECAP NOTE: The broadcasters asked for more materials such as powerpoints and graphics which they could use to better study and present climate change.

The science and economics of global warming are not too complicated for the average person to consider and make up his or her own mind. We urge you to do that. Go here and view some of the articles linked under “What’s New” or “A Primer on Global Warming.” Or go here and read about the new report from the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC), which comprehensively rebuts the claims of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
