Another major cyclone threatens flooding rains in flood weary Queensland

Bridie Smith in the Age wrote about the Cat 5 cyclone Yasi threatening flood ravaged Queensland.

“Yasi may be Queensland’s third cyclone in five weeks but it is not a symptom of a warming planet.  What can be attributed to global warming are some of the conditions that have contributed to the cyclone’s severity - namely the record-high sea surface temperatures.

“Extremely warm waters are potentially fuelling those cyclones,” said Andrew Ash, director of CSIRO’s Climate Adaptation Flagship. “The conditions are there to potentially make these events more extreme or more intense.” The Coral Sea, where cyclone Yasi formed, is about 28.5 degrees. The high ocean temperatures, which generate more evaporation and a better source of energy for cyclones, coincide with a very strong La Nina event - part of natural climate variability - bringing moisture to north-eastern Australia.

“This [La Nina] event is close to the strongest on record,” Dr Ash said yesterday. “It’s very similar to the event in 1917-18 and interestingly we had two very large cyclones in early 1918 associated with that strong La Nina event.”

ICECAP NOTE: The winter of 1917/18 was among the coldest on record in the United States - bearing some similarity to this year. It was a time coming off a very long and quiet solar minimum like this year. It was a strong La Nina in a cold PDO, again all like this year.

Here is the latest forecast and satellite image of Yasi.

The operators of the Wivenhoe dam have not learned from the recent experience when the mitigation capacity proved totally inadequate. The dam is 100% full as the cyclone approaches the coast, but the operators are following the book.

-------

Flooding historically in Queensland has occurred in La Ninas in cold PDO years, conditions occuring this year. A similar major flood occurred in 1974, a strong La Nina winter in the 1947-1977 cold PDO phase. This was shown in numerous peer review papers.

In fact if you composite all La Nina years with cold PDO you get this Queensland wet signal (November to March).

Declining Snow Cover Causes Record Snow Cover; Drudge link brings Internet inventor Gore site down

By Steve Goddard, Real Science

This winter (December-February) will almost certainly be in the top two snow cover years for the northern hemisphere. Right now it is positioned as the snowiest winter on record.

As our top climate scientists explain it, the shortage of snow cover is the cause of the record snow cover.

Nobel Prize Winner Al Gore ties the loose ends together :

As it turns out, the scientific community has been addressing this particular question for some time now and they say that increased heavy snowfalls are completely consistent with what they have been predicting as a consequence of man-made global warming

The shortage of snow causes global warming, which then creates an excess of snow. This is known among Nobel prize winning climate scientists as an excessshortage, or alternatively as a shortageexcess.

Gore’s website crashed by Drudge—The man who ‘created’ the Internet finds his website not up to task
Climate Depot

Former President Al Gore’s website was crashed by Matt Drudge’s website on Tuesday afternoon. Gore’s site was down from approximately 4:30 PM ET until about 6PM ET.  The DrudgeReport.com linked to Gore’s claim that “increased heavy snowfalls are completely consistent with… man-made global warming” at exactly 4:29pm ET.

Gore’s website crashed almost immediately following Drudge’s link. The irony for Gore is that he has touted his role of “creating the Internet.” “During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet,” Gore said during a March 9, 1999 CNN interview. It now appears the creator of the Internet’s website is not able to handle traffic from the DrudgeReport.com.

Gore has been joined by many proponents of man-made global warming in now claiming that record cold and snow is either “consistent with” or caused by global warming.

See: Flashback: Top Democrats Warn Low Snow Levels Prove Global Warming (Video) - ‘Watch Democrats Jay Inslee, Barbara Boxer, Amy Klobuchar, Robert Byrd and Dianne Feinstein express deep concern and alarm during years when winters were mild and snow was light, contending that global warming was the cause.’

Even more bad news for Al Gore is the fact that his claim that heavy snows being “completely consistent” with “man-made global warming” is being ridiculed by scientists and the claims are at odds with the UN climate panel that Gore shared a 2007 Nobel Prize with.

See: Climate ‘Bible’, the IPCC in 2007 ‘told us that winters would be WARMER and LESS extreme’ -- UN IPCC 2007: ‘More warm and fewer cold nights...fewer frost days...fewer cold outbreaks; fewer, shorter, less intense cold spells/cold extremes in winter’

Gore’s claim of snow being “consistent” with global warming is also at odds with is Oscar Winning 2006 film “An Inconvenient Truth.” Gore never once warned of record cold and increasing snowfalls as a consequence of man-made global warming in that film.

Freedom Action Urges Passage of Regulatory Pre-Emption Bill

Freedom Action

Washington, D.C., January 31, 2011 - In a move aimed at blocking the Obama Administration’s proliferating global warming regulations, Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) today introduced a bill to prohibit federal agencies from regulating greenhouse gas emissions.  Freedom Action supports enactment of the legislation, the Defending America’s Affordable Energy and Jobs Act.

“The American people have spoken and cap and trade legislation is dead, but unfortunately President Obama and his band of regulators haven’t gotten the message,” said Myron Ebell, President of Freedom Action.

“Sen. Barrasso’s bill clears the deck and puts Congress back in charge of our energy and global warming policies,” said Ebell.  “Our hope is that a similar bill will be introduced in the House and moved rapidly out of committee to a floor vote.

“Regulation of greenhouse gas emissions using the Clean Air Act and other laws not designed for the purpose is strangling investment in the economy and destroying jobs,” Ebell explained.  “Enactment of Sen. Barrasso’s bill is the largest single step the Congress could take to restore the American economy to a path of robust long-term growth.  Freedom Action supports enactment of Sen. Barrasso’s bill.”

The measure would overturn EPA’s finding that greenhouse gas emissions endanger public health and safety and block plans to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and industrial facilities using the Clean Air Act.
