The Hansen Hockey Stick

By Steve Goddard, Real Science

Mann spliced on GISS data, after the trees stopped cooperating with obtaining funding. Same story with sea level, splicing bloated satellite data on to bloated tide gauge data.

I took the liberty to do the same with GISS data, which became tainted after 1998 by massive data tampering. The graph below shows GISS before 1998, and RSS satellite data after 1998.

Temperatures are lower in 2012 than they were during the early 1940s, and it becomes clear why Hansen has to tamper with the data.

Dr Richard Lindzen did a great job testifying at the House of Commons, here’s the key summary:

Stated briefly, I will simply try to clarify what the debate over climate change is really about. It most certainly is not about whether climate is changing: it always is. It is not about whether CO2 is increasing: it clearly is. It is not about whether the increase in CO2, by itself, will lead to some warming: it should. The debate is simply over the matter of how much warming the increase in CO2 can lead to, and the connection of such warming to the innumerable claimed catastrophes. The evidence is that the increase in CO2 will lead to very little warming, and that the connection of this minimal warming (or even significant warming) to the purported catastrophes is also minimal. The arguments on which the catastrophic claims are made are extremely weak - and commonly acknowledged as such. They are sometimes overtly dishonest.

Climatologists vs. Weather Forecasters

Climatologists believe in man made global warming, because without it they receive little funding or recognition. They can make predictions 100 years in the future, and change them every few months.

Weather forecasters don’t believe in man made global warming, because their job depends on being continuously accurate and telling the truth.

a survey conducted by George Mason University in 2010* that found 63% of weathercasters believe global warming is due mainly to natural causes compared to just 31% who think it’s mostly a result of human causes. Some 27 percent of weathercasters referred to global warming as “a scam.”

Comments on NOAA’s new focus on extremes

Dr. Richard Keen

"Predicting and managing extreme weather events” by Lubchenco and Karl is a collection of the usual bromides one would expect from the duo.  I’ll chip in with a few comments on some gems that are within the L&K article.

“The public holds a record-low opinion of government. The integrity of the scientific process is being questioned”
True.  Do they wonder why?

“Last year, new records were set in the US for...”
No kidding.  Records are made to be broken, and a year without records would be more worthy of note.

“We at NOAA were able to predict most of the weather- and climate-related extreme events, but our capacity to continue to
do so is seriously threatened by downward pressure on our budgets.”
Easy - shift the funds from meaningless and failed attempts to predict climate to what NOAA does best (and most usefully), forecasting
weather and severe events.  The combined efforts of the Weather Service and other agencies has measurably saved tens of thousands of
lives over recent decades; the billions spent on climate have saved none.

“The number of events that produced on the order of $1 billion or more in damages in 2011 is the largest since tracking of that statistic
began in 1980, even after damages are adjusted for inflation.  There are likely a number of contributing factors, including upward trends
in population and infrastructure, migration to vulnerable areas, and climate change.”
It seems the studies by the Pielkes and others rules out climate change as a factor, leaving inflation, population, and infrastructure
as the sole factors in the increasing value of disasters.

“Weather- and climate-related disasters in the US claimed more than 1000 lives in 2011, almost double the yearly average.”
Many meteorological variables vary interannually by a factor of two or more, so this statistic, while sad, fails to be impressive.

The IPCC “says that we can expect more of many kinds of extremeevents”, all likely or even “virtually certain”.
The key word here is “virtual”, since in the real world of meteorological data, none of these five events is showing a clear increase over historical values.

“one essential key to meeting those challenges is critical environmental intelligence. Just like the intelligence of the security world”
Only if the intelligence is good.  WMDs anyone?

“overall, the percentage of the country affected by extreme heat, cold, rainfall, soil moisture, or soil dryness in a given year has
trended upward in recent decades. The index has been high in the past, but the increase from about 1970 to the present day is steady and
pronounced.”

So, current high values are due to “climate change”, but the previous high values were normal.  Finding a trend since 1950 or 1970, during a
period when the PDO, AMO et al. cycled warmer, is a cheap way to demonstrate AGW.  But I’ll give L&K credit for posting the data that
shows no change over 100+ years.

“Figure 3. Climate models are increasingly able to capture region-scale features.”
If you consider a forecast that’s 5 to 10 degrees higher than observed a good call, then the models are OK.

“Figure 4.Experts’ level of physical understanding”.  Apparently they do think a 10 degree error is OK, since they place heat waves high in their level of understanding.
Again, I’ll give L&K credit for including data that puts the lie to many of their claims.

Longest Winter On Record In The Arctic?

Posted on March 22, 2012 by Steven Goddard

A fundamental tenet of global warming is shorter winters and longer melt seasons in the Arctic.

It appears quite possible that the winter of 2011-2012 will be the longest winter on record in the Arctic. Freeze-up began during the first week in September, and probably won’t end until the last week in March. Nearly seven full months of increasing ice extent - almost a full month longer than normal.

This is very bad news for alarmists, who will have to lie about the Arctic even more than they normally do.

Tom Wysmuller adds in comments:

Same thing happened in 2008, after the record open Arctic of September 2007. Sharply increased albedo arising out of earlier deposition of “Ocean Effect” snows on the north Eurasian landmass dropped Arctic temperatures earlier (10 degrees below average) through most of the winter. When the Sun returned in spring, late snowmelt kept temperatures lower and 300,000 square km additional floating sea ice ended up augmenting the following year’s summer ice cover.

Heartland papers - The real scandal

Eugenio Hackbart / MetSul Weather Center (Brazil)

The climate debate has crossed dangerous lines. It is no longer a debate itself, but a political and ideological war. Both Climategate (CRU e-mails) and the Heartland Files cases were originated in criminal acts of intrusion, invasion and conspiracy. We meteorologists and researchers should all question ourselves if this is the kind of debate we wish to have. Civility was replaced by accusations. The healthy confrontation of ideas is secondary to espionage. This is the real scandal.

I sincerely do not care if Jim Hansen, Michael Mann, Anthony Watts or Craig Idso are funded by private interest groups or public money if the scientific work they carry is honest and truthful. I am interested in scientific facts and conclusions, not political or ideological demagoguery. What we should never accept is any form of intimidation or attempts to silence the opposite view, regardless of the scientific thinking. This is the real scandal.

Despite some claims of a consensus in the scientific community regarding climate change I cannot see this unanimous view. There is majority thinking and a minority line of research, but never a unanimous belief on global warming. It is crucial that both camps are adequately funded in the research they carry. So, I see no legal issue on Anthony Watts getting a 44 thousand dollars funding for a project that will provide better understanding of climate data. I read no critics on the merit of the project itself, but only for the money the California’s meteorologist will get to the development. It is clearly a personal matter, not a substantive one. This is the real scandal.

Finally, the climate debate was sadly hijacked by politicians and political pundits. The opinions of Al Gore, Rick Santorum, Sarah Palin or Rick Perry do not aggregate anything to my knowledge. Instead I prefer to read good articles posted by Jeff Masters (not a skeptic) or Joe D’Aleo (skeptic) among many others in both camps of the climate change research. Politicians target votes and power. Scientists persecute the truth. Let’s not forget that and have a real debate based on scientific findings and not leaking scandals.

Cleveland meteorologists under fire for proving “global warming” a myth

By David Saurer, Examiner

Good afternoon.  David’s friend and chief meteorologist of the Power of 5 weather network at WEWS Cleveland, Mark Johnson, has recently been drawing fire for his claims, “Earth hasn’t warmed in 15 years” story on newsnet5.com (here).  The group, “thinkprogress.org”, began the criticism.  The group “Forecast the Facts” on Facebook, (here) also joined in the crusade.

Just when things were just staying on one meteorologist, they decided to go after another Cleveland meteorologist, WJW FOX 8 weather, Andre Bernier.  Andre’s story related to the same topic titled, “Serious global…COOLING?” (here).

David also believes in the same criteria in global warming as Mark and Andre believes in.  David states, “Anthropogenic climate change, or “Global Warming,” is nothing more than a corrupt political agenda based theory. There is no good science that has gone into the “research” or findings. Climate change goes both ways. The Earth warms, the Earth cools.  The Earth has been doing this for millions and millions of years and we can’t control the weather in the short term, nevertheless the climate.”

Clevelanders, we need to stand behind our meteorologists that deliver the accurate forecast and state the truth.  Support Mark and Andre’s claims on the lies, government cover-ups, and government make-ups by the paid scientists.

Clevelanders looking for latest weather information across Northeastern Ohio and greater Cleveland area.  You can catch the great weather team and friends of mine, Chief Meteorologist, Jimmy Cornell, and Meteorologists Brian Ivey, Eric Poston, and Mark Spencer of www.neoweather.com.  They are Northeastern Ohio’s most comprehensive and accurate weather team around.  They are also located on Facebook, www.facebook.com/neoweather.  Check them out sometime and tell them David Saurer sent you.

Clevelanders looking for the national weather information, news, and forecast.  Check out David Saurer’s national weather blog.

Mark and Andre Bernier and the other climate realists are the honest scientists.

New study: People with better knowledge of science are more likely to be sceptical of global warming

Nostradomus of the North

A new study by the Cultural Cognition Project at Yale Law School has produced a result that its authors want to hide:

People with better knowledge of science and stronger reasoning skills are more likely to be skeptical of climate change than people with lower levels of comprehension.

This is without doubt the most importantant finding in the new study, but because it does not fit into the warmist authors’ agenda, they choose to bury it in a heap of sociological gobbledygook:

The Tragedy of the Risk-Perception Commons: Culture Conflict, Rationality Conflict, and Climate Change

Global Warming: A U.S. Presidential Candidate Actually Uses His Common Sense & Scientific Evidence
C3 Headlines

Ron Paul makes candid comments regarding global warming and climate change - employs empirical evidence instead of highly speculative predictions

Read here. ‘C3’ readers are well aware that there is absolutely zero empirical evidence to suggest that human CO2 emissions will cause rapid global warming with catastrophic climate change being the result. Likewise, ‘C3’ readers know well that all the global climate models have an absolutely atrocious record regarding their catastrophic climate predictions.

It would appear Ron Paul agrees and approaches the global warming issue and human CO2 emissions with a reliance on empirical-based science, not the Ouijia-board science of climate model predictions.

“I try to look at global warming the same way I look at all other serious issues: as objectively and open-minded as possible. There is clear evidence that the temperatures in some parts of the globe are rising, but temperatures are cooling in other parts. The average surface temperature had risen for several decades, but it fell back substantially in the past few years...Clearly there is something afoot. The question is: Is the upward fluctuation in temperature man-made or part of a natural phenomenon.”

It’s refreshing to hear a candidate who does not pander to the climate hysteria of the anti-science left / liberal mainstream press.

Hansen Explains The Missing IQ

By Steve Goddard

James Hansen:

We conclude that recent slowdown of ocean heat uptake was caused by a delayed rebound effect from Mount Pinatubo aerosols and a deep prolonged solar minimum. Observed sea level rise during the Argo float era is readily accounted for by ice melt and ocean thermal expansion, but the ascendency of ice melt leads us to anticipate acceleration of the rate of sea level rise this decade.

A couple of months ago the missing heat was due to Chinese aerosols. Now it is due to Pinatubo aerosols from 20 years ago.

Earth to Jim - Pinatubo aerosols were gone by 1995. There has been essentially no warming since then.

image

The sun didn’t affect the temperature when it had record high activity last century, but now it affects the temperature since temperatures stopped rising.

Hansen said this in October:

“the solar forcing is too small to make the net imbalance negative, i.e., solar variations are not going to cause global cooling.”

Antigreenblogspot chimes in

Hansen’s explanation of why the oceans are not warming

Excerpt:

Improving observations of ocean heat content show that Earth is absorbing more energy from the sun than it is radiating to space as heat, even during the recent solar minimum. The inferred planetary energy imbalance, 0.59 ± 0.15 W m−2 during the 6-year period 2005–2010, confirms the dominant role of the human-made greenhouse effect in driving global climate change. Observed surface temperature change and ocean heat gain together constrain the net climate forcing and ocean mixing rates. We conclude that most climate models mix heat too efficiently into the deep ocean and as a result underestimate the negative forcing by human-made aerosols. Aerosol climate forcing today is inferred to be -1.6 +- 0.3 W m-2, implying substantial aerosol indirect climate forcing via cloud changes. Continued failure to quantify the specific origins of this large forcing is untenable, as knowledge of changing aerosol effects is needed to understand future climate change.

One doesn’t need to go into the physics involved to see that this is bad science. It is in fact a particularly egregious example of a post hoc explanation—being wise after the event in layman’s terms. Such explanations get as little respect in science as elsewhere.

Such explanations are given when something predicted by theory fails to occur—and when there is one clear confounding factor they can have some status. But Hansen’s paper has no such status. He has to invoke a whole range of special influences, some of which seem to be entirely imaginary. Without any evidence for it he extends the influence of the Pinatubo eruption to two decades, which is wildly outside the normal expectation of a couple of years at most. The paper is a patent work of desperation.

On the amusing side, he admits an effect of solar variations, something long denied by Warmists, including himself.
