The ShadowLands’ story about the United Nations’ failed prediction that there would be 50 million climate refugees by 2010 has gone global, and the United Nations Environment Programme’s subsequent attempt to hide the evidence only made it much, much worse.

German magazine der Spiegel has published a thoughtful article on the subject, with the first response from the UNEP as follows:

But now the UN is distancing itself from the forecast: “It is not a UNEP prediction,” a UNEP spokesman told SPIEGEL ONLINE. The forecast has since been removed from UNEP’s website…

The UNEP spokesman said the map had been produced for a newspaper “based on various sources.” He said the map had been taken off the UNEP website “because it was causing confusion and making some journalists think UNEP was the source of such forecasts.”

So let’s get this straight. UNEP provided a map to the media, but the information UNEP provided did not come from UNEP. This is odd, because the cartographer we were asked to credit (and I did credit at the foot of the original post), Emmanuelle Bournay is described here as the UNEP cartographer.

In any case, are we supposed to be happy that the UNEP provided information to the media that is presumably false? And if the map is wrong, in what way is it wrong? And why was it removed after Asian Correspondent linked to it, but not when pro-global warming lobbyists like this or this linked to it?

Whatever their argument, the United Nations has their fingerprints all over the 50 million refugees claim. See, for example, if any of you super-sleuths can find any UN links to the claim here.

It was also repeated, as der Spiegel pointed out, by the President of the UN General Assembly, Srgjan Kerim and the former head of the UNFCCC, Yvo ("don’t call me Smoky") de Boer.

And - for heaven’s sake - it was repeated in one of the UNEP’s own media releases.

But why, I hear you ask, did the United Nations exaggerate the situation in the first place? Maybe you can find a clue here:

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, on behalf of international humanitarian organizations, today called for USD 7.4 billion to provide urgent humanitarian aid to 50 million people in 28 countries worldwide.

In Al Gore’s presentation of his “Inconvenient Truth” documentary, he conveniently separated the Vostok Ice core temperature and CO2 graphs so you could not see which came first, a warming spike or a CO2 spike. He said that a CO2 spike came first but alas, it was the just the opposite as shown in the Vostok Ice Core graph below.

When both lines are combined on one graph, suitably enlarged and viewed in the correct direction from left to right, it is clearly seen that a warming spike always comes first (blue line) followed by a CO2 increase (red line) some 800 years later.

There are many reasons for the oceans to warm and cool over long periods of time and those influences are not the subject of this paper. Warming of the oceans reduces the solubility of CO2 in water which results in the liberation of CO2. An additional effect of the oceans warming up is that more water vaporizes and for each pound of water evaporated 1,000 Btu of cooling occurs. Increased water vapor and CO2 in the atmosphere then causes a further cooling effect through the reflection of more radiation back to outer space. Nature has this under control.

Gore also gave no explanation what would cause a CO2 spike to occur in the first place. What is so disturbing here is that, just like Al Gore, many climatologists and meteorologists seem to have a problem discerning cause and effect. It is very simple, if what you call an effect comes first, you have it backwards; a cause always comes first to produce the effect.

A reconstruction of annual Greenland ice melt extent, 1784–2009
(Journal of Geophysical Research, Volume 116, April 2011) - Oliver W. Frauenfeld, Paul C. Knappenberger, Patrick J. Michaels covered on World Climate Report here.

Abstract: The total extent of ice melt on the Greenland ice sheet has been increasing during the last three decades. The melt extent observed in 2007 in particular was the greatest on record according to several satellite-derived records of total Greenland melt extent. Total annual observed melt extent across the Greenland ice sheet has been shown to be strongly related to summer temperature measurements from stations located along Greenland’s coast, as well as to variations in atmospheric circulation across the North Atlantic. We make use of these relationships along with historical temperature and circulation observations to develop a near-continuous 226 year reconstructed history of annual Greenland melt extent dating from 2009 back into the late eighteenth century. We find that the recent period of high-melt extent is similar in magnitude but, thus far, shorter in duration, than a period of high melt lasting from the early 1920s through the early 1960s. The greatest melt extent over the last 2 1/4 centuries occurred in 2007; however, this value is not statistically significantly different from the reconstructed melt extent during 20 other melt seasons, primarily during 1923-1961.

Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson hopes that Osama bin Laden’s death will spur President Barack Obama to promote climate change legislation.

“My hope is that from this success in the foreign policy arena two days ago, that he will be emboldened to take once again to the Congress legislation - not just to increase a renewable energy standard - but climate change legislation that this country and the world need,” Richardson said Tuesday at a Climate Leadership Gala hosted by the Earth Day Network in Washington.

Climate change legislation, particularly anything labeled as toxic as “cap and trade,” is seen as non-starter while Republicans hold the House and many Senate Democrats are wary of the issue. But Richardson warned climate bill backers against standing on the sidelines.

“We can sit back and say, ‘Well we’ll wait until the next election, wait until the political climate is better.’ You know if we do that, we’re doomed - if we don’t take action right away,” he said.
We expect this kind of lunacy from hopeless cases like Al Gore, now looked upon as the nutty uncle in the attic. But we always took Richardson as somewhat sane. Well, those days are over.

Our economy is already on life support what with soaring gas and food prices. Cap-and-trade would be a death blow. If anything, that would doom us.

I see the inevitable blame-humanity game has been reinvigorated by the recent tornado swarm. I have not read other meteorologists’ treatment of this issue, so what follows can be considered an independent opinion on the matter.

If there is one weather phenomenon global warming theory does NOT predict more of, it would be severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Tornadic thunderstorms do not require tropical-type warmth. In fact, tornadoes are almost unheard of in the tropics, despite frequent thunderstorm activity.

Instead, tornadoes require strong wind shear (wind speed and direction changing rapidly with height in the lower atmosphere), the kind which develops when cold and warm air masses “collide”. Of course, other elements must be present, such as an unstable airmass and sufficient low-level humidity, but wind shear is the key. Strong warm advection (warm air riding up and over the cooler air mass, which is also what causes the strong wind shear) in advance of a low pressure area riding along the boundary between the two air masses is where these storms form.

But contrasting air mass temperatures is the key. Active tornado seasons in the U.S. are almost always due to unusually COOL air persisting over the Midwest and Ohio Valley longer than it normally does as we transition into spring.

For example, the poster child for active tornado seasons was the Superoutbreak of 1974, which was during globally cool conditions. This year, we are seeing much cooler than normal conditions through the corn belt, even delaying the planting schedule. Cool La Nina years seem to favor more tornadoes, and we are now coming out of a persistent La Nina. The global-average temperature has plummeted by about 1 deg. F in just one year.

An unusually warm Gulf of Mexico of 1 or 2 degrees right now cannot explain the increase in contrast between warm and cold air masses which is key for tornado formation because that slight warmth cannot compete with the 10 to 20 degree below-normal air in the Midwest and Ohio Valley which has not wanted to give way to spring yet.

The “extra moisture” from the Gulf is not that important, because it’s almost always available this time of year...it’s the wind shear that caused this outbreak.

More tornadoes due to “global warming”, if such a thing happened, would be more tornadoes in Canada, where they don’t usually occur. NOT in Alabama.

It is well known that strong to violent tornado activity in the U.S. has decreased markedly since statistics began in the 1950s, which has also been a period of average warming. So, if anything, global warming causes FEWER tornado outbreaks...not more. In other words, more violent tornadoes would, if anything, be a sign of “global cooling”, not “global warming”.

Anyone who claims more tornadoes are caused by global warming is either misinformed, pandering, or delusional.

Let’s remove the inappropriate data and update it for 2011 so far.

Sydney Morning Herald columnist Elizabeth Farrelly sighs for the virtue of a communist dictatorship, which, unike Australia, needs not pander to the 80 per cent of the population which has an IQ of just 80 and resists virtuous causes such as global warming:

Whether non-democracies such as China will negotiate the rapids of the coming century more adroitly remains to be seen. Certainly, freed from any need to pander to the 80/80 rule, they have at least one freedom Western-style democracies do not have – the freedom to act decisively.

Farrelly of course imagines herself in the 20 per cent of the intellectual elite, and thus born to dictate.
